October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Approximately one in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer at some point in their lives. This message became more personal last year when my 50 year old sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. After watching her go through a double mastectomy and chemotherapy, I saw first hand that early detection is vital. If you have dense breasts, make sure you are getting the appropriate screening. Please make sure the women in your life get their annual mammograms.

Kirk Players Presents Red Herring

Kirk Players is thrilled to open their 53 rd season with the powerfully funny, drippingly romantic, mysteriously explosive Red Herring by Michael Hollinger.
The show opens Friday, October 12 at the Mundelein High Theatre at 7:30pm with matinees at 2pm on Saturday, October 13 and Sunday, October 14 and another evening performance on Saturday, October 13 @ 7:30pm.
Three love stories, a murder mystery and a nuclear espionage plot converge in this noir comedy about marriage and other explosive devices. It’s 1952 and America is on the verge of the H-Bomb, Dwight Eisenhower is on the campaign trail, and I Love Lucy is on TV on Monday nights.
A cleverly written story, entwined with farcical humor, mistaken identity and who-dun-it style mystery that will keep the audience guessing and laughing!

MHS Students to be Screened With EKGs
Mundelein High School students will have an opportunity to be screened Wednesday, October 24 for early detection of possible heart problems. The testing is being made possible at the low cost of $15 by the Max Schewitz Foundation named after a 20-year-old Lake County resident who died without warning from a hidden heart condition.

The testing will include the EKG for all participants. Students selected by the cardiologist will also have additional testing that day at no cost. Testing is free for students who are registered with the school to receive free or reduced lunch.

According to the Foundation, high school is an ideal time for someone to have a baseline EKG since the greatest risk of sudden cardiac death is between ages 17 and 22. The EKG is a visual representation of the heart’s function. It is quick, painless and can detect many potentially life-threatening heart conditions.

All efforts are made to respect privacy and modesty. Testing takes place in individual booths, and boys and girls are tested separately. Cardiologist Brian Shortal, MD, will oversee all aspects of testing and interpretation. Results are confidential and are shared only with parents within three weeks of the testing.

To register a student and/or to volunteer, please visit the Foundation website at www.heartsmartekg.org
Mundelein Cert Training
Local Lake County flooding, Hurricane Florence, Wildfires in California, blizzards, volcanic disruptions in Hawaii - disasters and unplanned emergencies can happen close to home, across the globe, where family lives, or where you might choose to vacation. Do you know what to do in an emergency? Are you ready to take care of yourself, your family, senior relatives, and pets? Have natural disasters or technological events happening around the globe sparked your interest in obtaining training to have the skills to prepare your family or volunteer locally and give back to those in need? If so, consider joining the Mundelein Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) for a weekend of training on emergency preparedness.

People who go through CERT training have a better understanding of the potential threats to their home, workplace, and community and can take the right steps to lessen the effects of these hazards. Training is free to individuals 18 years of age or older (or those 16 and 17 years old with a permission slip and waiver from their parents). Individuals who complete the course and live within a 10-mile radius of the Village of Mundelein are invited to join the Mundelein CERT team, although this is not a requirement. However, if you do choose to join, there are lots of follow on opportunities for training in topics such as first aid, CPR, AED, traffic control, stop the bleed, radio communications, and more.

Training will take place at Mundelein Fire Station #1 at 1000 N Midlothian. Dates and times for training are Friday November 2 6:00-10:00 pm, Saturday November 3 8:00-4:00 pm, and Sunday November 4 8:00-4:00 pm. Visit the Mundelein CERT website  ( http://www.cert.mundelein.org/training.html ), send a message through the CERT facebook page - Mundelein CERT,   or contact the fire station at 847-949-3260 to sign up for this in-depth valuable training. Please sign up by October 25, 2018 so our certified instructors can adequately prepare. Spanish materials can be available.
