This week is National Apprenticeship Week and while apprentice programs have been around since the Dark Ages, today they are more valuable than ever . We need more health care professionals, building trades craftsmen and women, technologists, logisticians, airline mechanics, and more.

Luke Rhine of the Delaware Department of Education described apprenticeships succinctly when he said:

“Apprenticeships combine paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction to prepare workers for highly-skilled careers. Delaware is one of a handful of states leading the way to blur the line between our K-12, higher education system, and labor market. Innovative apprenticeship models are a significant part of this reform, i.e., employers are now able to work with Delaware’s technical high schools to hire youth apprentices in their senior year of high school. In their senior year, youth apprentices will complete the first year of a registered apprenticeship program, earn an industry valued credential and college credits, and participate in paid on-the-job training all while finishing their high school diploma.”

Apprenticeship programs in Delaware are evolving and growing rapidly. The IT and hospitality programs are new, and the design of additional programs is underway. Learn more >

We kick off a busy week tomorrow with October retail sales data, industrial production results, and import price insights. Wednesday is all about housing, and we’ll learn of national building permit data and housing starts figures from October. Thursday brings us leading economic indicator results from October, an early look at November jobless claims, and the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index from November.

Earnings and shareholder calls this week include information today from AECOM and ImmuCell Corp., while tomorrow we’ll hear from Aramark, La-Z-Boy, Home Depot, and Walmart. Others reporting results this week includes NVIDIA, Target, Lowe’s, Progressive, and Sonos.
