“I have great faith in optimism as a guiding principle,
if only because it offers us the opportunity of creating
a self-fulfilling prophecy.”
—Arthur C. Clarke

In numerous aspects of complex lives, we assess potential pathways to goal achievement.
With 1000s of choices to make, methodically facilitating this process can alleviate mental anguish associated with perpetually reinventing the decision-making wheel. Educational curators consistently apply Guiding Principles which benefit those in their sphere of professional influence. A near and dear foundational issue highlighted Whole Person Care, Health Literacy and (HDI style) Translational Research.
“Right before our eyes, at unprecedented speed, business conditions have changed. Given this disruption’s rapidity, progressive decision makers should take comfort in and capitalize on timeless guiding principles. As we “Diagnose and Treat” comorbidity education initiatives, it is imperative to embed high-integrity protocols in strategic and tactical thought processes.”
Guided by patient-centric tenets, we examine Health Literacy, defined by the World Health Organization as:
“... cognitive and social skills which determine the motivation and ability of individuals to gain access to, understand and use information in ways which promote and maintain good health. By improving people’s access to health information and their capacity to use it effectively, health literacy is critical to empowerment.” 1

Closely related to constructive challenges of optimally conveying complex medical information is, as previously described, our Curse of Knowledge nemesis:
“This is the Curse of Knowledge. Once we know something, we find it hard to imagine what it was like not to know it. Our knowledge has ‘cursed’ us. And it becomes difficult for us to share our knowledge with others, because we can’t readily re-create our listeners’ state of mind.”
Recognizing educational imperatives face communication challenges, logic points us in right directions.
To boost awareness and mutual understanding, memorable phrases may ease communication barriers. In the realm of Uniquely Intertwined hearing and brain function, our Ears Collect, Brains Connect™ theme comes to mind. As cleverly shown in clockwise rotation, sound stimulus icons pass through auditory cortex to diametrically positioned real life vignettes.

In your clinical interactions, this In Sight, In Mind visual naturally sparks educational dialogue, often prompting patients’ inquisitive response of “Tell Me More”…
In that context, as many of you are aware, chronicling decades of dedicated research, Nina Kraus’ amazing book is, for Brain Hearing aficionados, a MUST read.
Passion rules and as described:
“Making sense of sound is one of the hardest jobs we ask our brains to do. In Of Sound Mind, Nina Kraus examines the partnership of sound and brain, showing for the first time that the processing of sound drives many of the brain's core functions. Our hearing is always on—we can't close our ears the way we close our eyes—and yet we can ignore sounds that are unimportant. We don't just hear; we engage with sounds.”
