Drop-Off Recycling Event to Benefit NRC
|
|
Sustainable spring cleaning just got easier! The Nebraska Recycling Council (NRC) is hosting its annual recycling day event on Saturday, April 24th from 9am - noon at the Nebraska Innovation Campus in Lincoln. NRC’s CHaRM event (a Collection for Hard to Recycle Materials) is a one-stop collection event to recycle old electronics, batteries, scrap metal, EPS foam coolers and packaging, secure documents for shredding, textiles, and to donate reusable housewares and clothing.
Most items are accepted for free except for TVs ($10-$35 fee based on size). A suggested donation of $10 per vehicle benefits the statewide work of the Nebraska Recycling Council. Visit www.nrcne.org/2021charm for a complete list of acceptable items and limitations.
To keep the recycling event safe for everyone participating, residents are asked to wear masks and to stay in their vehicles. Materials should be placed in the back seat, trunk, or bed of the vehicle for volunteers to unload. The event takes place in the parking lot northeast of The Mill at 2021 Transformation Drive, enter from Salt Creek Roadway at the far east entrance close to the 27th Street overpass.
The CHaRM Event is sponsored by Sadoff E-Recycling and Data Destruction, Goodwill of Lincoln, Interstate All Battery, Plastilite, and Shredding Solutions. Nebraska Innovation Campus and Tetrad Property Group are hosting the event location. For questions or more information, contact info@nrcne.org.

Spring is here and with that comes spring cleaning! Whether it’s decluttering, getting rid of the winter blues, or simply seeking a useful way to spend time during social distancing, spring cleaning is a tradition that requires some extra deep cleaning. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t be environmentally friendly while doing it. To help you get started we’ve included a couple tips and tricks:
-
Use non-toxic cleaning products; vinegar is also a great multipurpose cleaner
- Repurpose dust rags from old clothing or socks
- Switch out paper towels for reusable towels
-
Open the windows and stick to DIY essential oil fresheners or natural air fresheners
-
Never throw away textiles! Please repair, donate, or recycle clothing, stuffed animals, bedding, curtains, etc. People's City Mission will responsibly recycle or donate.
-
If you haven’t used it in a few months it might be time to get rid of that item, but first, consider if it can be repurposed or donated to your local secondhand store.
-
Finally, use our Recycling Guide to find out where you can responsibly recycle or dispose of everything from electronics to hazardous waste.

Member Spotlight: Hofeling Enterprises
|
|
This is part of a series of interviews with NRC members. The purpose is to provide insights into materials management programs and best practices of member municipalities, businesses, and service providers.
|
|
When Scott Hofeling started trimming trees in the ‘90s, he quickly discovered how many trees there are in Lincoln, and how much wood they produce in the trimming and removal process. It didn’t take long to become inundated with leftover trimmings; in his wife LeAnn’s words, “We couldn’t give the stuff away, and we weren’t going to landfill it!” They decided the most straightforward solution was to turn that wood waste into new products, and the recycling arm of Hofeling Enterprises, Inc., was born.

Nebraska Recycling Council & Keep Nebraska Beautiful Host Legislative Recycling Day
|
|
On March 11th, NRC held its annual legislative engagement event with Keep Nebraska Beautiful. Nine senators and legislative aides joined our virtual breakfast to learn from both organizations regarding our missions, programs, upcoming events, and how we can consult on future studies or legislation. It was also an opportunity to meet members of our organizations that are represented throughout the state, including NRC’s Advisory Council and Board of Directors, and the Keep Nebraska Beautiful affiliate sites. See a recording of the event here:

EPA is accepting applications for funding to improve community health, resilience, and sustainability through sustainable materials management in EPA Region 7 (serving Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and nine Tribal Nations). Applications are due May 3, 2021.
Students from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's environmental studies orientation course examine recycle labels on bottles collected from bins in Hardin Hall on March 24. The students conducted a waste audit, learning how to gauge the success of a recycling program.
Education campaigns may improve curbside recycling practices for residents who produce average or low amounts of contamination, but they may not impact the worst offenders, according to new research.
