Earth Day Demonstrates the Power of Purpose

The history of Earth Day (more details at this link on History.com) notes that the original idea was born out of the increased environmental awareness of the 1960s and inspired by the growing activism of college students during that decade. The movement is now international, and colleges continue to be a driving force of both education and action in the drive to promote a thriving planet.

Looking at the many students who care deeply about the health of the planet shows that in this context, they are able and willing to see -- and play -- the long game. Taking action today that may reduce one's carbon footprint, for example, is a quintessential exercise in sustaining motivation while awaiting delayed gratification. But the strong sense of purpose that such students feel allows them to sustain that motivation day by day.

Coaches can use Earth Day, or any other movement around which a student feels a strong sense of purpose, as an analogy for the long game of studying, learning, and pursuing a college degree or certificate.

We can ask students:

  • Think about what gives you a strong sense of purpose. How does that keep you motivated to act over time, even if the goal is far ahead? What does that tell you about your ability to sustain your drive?

  • In what course do you feel the least motivated right now? How might you find a sense of purpose for driving through to the finish line?

  • What personal goal have you achieved that took a long time, and sustained effort, to reach? How do you feel about what you accomplished?

  • When you envision a successful end to this term, what does it look like? What actions will you take now that can get you there?

Increase your own sense of purpose with the long-term goal of helping students become their most active and thriving selves.
