The Power of Outdoor Learning

Outdoor learning provides hands-on experiences that deepen students’ understanding of nature and local environments.

Activities like gardening and field trips engage curiosity, critical thinking, and the senses. These experiences enhance academic learning while promoting physical activity, mental well-being, and social-emotional growth beyond what traditional classrooms often offer.

Our Environmental Education team supports outdoor learning throughout the county. For example, students from Lochburn Middle School took a field trip with our team to learn about their local watersheds.

“My students enjoyed Flett Creek, and it was a breath of fresh air not just having to be on campus and learning, they got to see, feel, and hear the environment," said Dionte Simon, YMCA program coordinator at Lochburn Middle School.

These enriching experiences can also happen on school grounds! Recently, students from Ford Middle School worked with our team on a project to restore a portion of their campus to its native ecosystem.

“I can't overstate the impact of learning about an ecosystem on campus … and being able to do something about it in real time,” said teacher Anthony Allen.

Outdoor learning helps students explore science, math, and sustainability through real-world experiences that inspire stewardship and wonder.

Make Your Own Green Cleaners

As you get ready to tackle spring cleaning, take steps toward better indoor air quality and preserve your pipes, drain field, or shared sewer pipes by making your own green cleaners.

Commercial cleaners can be costly and full of unnecessary chemical allergens, too harsh, or even be poisonous to pets and humans. Not to mention the damage they can cause to pipes when they are washed down the drain.

Try a green floor cleaner

Laminate vinyl plank and tile are common types of household flooring these days. How do you clean yours? Here is an effective and inexpensive cleaner for these products:

In a 32-ounce spray bottle combine:

  • 3 and ¾ cups distilled or previously boiled and cooled water
  • ¼ cup distilled white vinegar
  • About five drops of your favorite liquid soap (castile soap, dish soap, etc.)
  • Optional: a few drops of essential oil for fragrance

Why does this work? The soap loosens dirt, and the pH of the vinegar makes it inhabitable for pathogens. For a waste-less twist, use reusable microfiber mop pads that can be put in the wash with your other reusable cleaning rags. No need for expensive, disposable mop pads.
