Projects of Merit

Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian House - Lakeland, FL

The Sharp Family Tourism and Education Center, featuring the Wright-designed Usonian House, opened November 2013 as part of an ongoing effort to better educate visitors to the Wright architecture at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida. An EarthLinked Geothermal System heats and cools the 1,700 sq. ft. Usonian House, keeping visitors comfortable as they admire the unique features of the structure.

Wright's intent was that his buildings "... grow out of the ground and into the light, a child of the sun," something an EarthLinked system accomplishes very well by drawing energy from the earth to heat and cool the building's interior.

Residence Inn by Marriott - Chicopee, MA

An EarthLinked Commercial Water Heating System was installed at the new Residence Inn in Chicopee, MA. The small footprint of the earth loop field allowed it to be installed under the basketball court adjoining the building, while a single unit will preheat water for all hot water needs including guest rooms, kitchen and laundry.

Finding Rebates for Energy Efficient Home Improvements

Just as in Spring when a young man's fancy turns to love, a homeowner's thoughts turn to home improvement projects. The warmer weather and the promise of an income tax refund may combine to thaw the resolve of even the most reluctant DIY'er. But which improvements make the most sense and promise the most bang for your buck?

According to EnergyStar.gov, heating accounts for 29% of a home's total energy use, cooling consumes 17%, and water heating another 14%. Improvements that reduce energy consumption in these three areas not only help lower utility bills but do something positive for the environment. But the improvements make even more sense when you get money back on the initial investment. But where to find that hidden money in the form of tax rebates and incentives?

Federal

The U.S. government offers tax credits for certain energy-efficient home improvements. According to the IRS  and Energy Star, alternative energy equipment such as geothermal heat pumps are eligible for a tax credit equal to 30% of the cost of the qualified improvement. The credit is available through the end of 2016 and can be claimed on your federal tax return.

State

Some state, county and municipal governments also have credit programs for energy-efficient home improvements. Visit www.dsireusa.org to view a clickable map of U.S. states where such rebates are available. Choose your state, and you'll see a list of county, municipal and state programs that may be available to you.
