ISSUE 10 OCTOBER 2024

Welcome to Earthrise

Apollo 8, the first crewed mission to the Moon, entered lunar orbit Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, 1968. That evening, the astronauts - Commander Frank Borman, Command Module Pilot Jim Lovell, and Lunar Module Pilot William Anders - held a live broadcast from lunar orbit in which they showed pictures of Earth and the Moon as seen from their spacecraft. Credits: NASA

Earthrise is an initiative launched by NASA in cooperation with federal and nonfederal partners to elevate Earth and climate science in the classroom. Each monthly edition focuses on a new theme, such as air quality, oceans, and agriculture.

October 2024 Issue:

Earth Science Is Everywhere

“Earth Science Everywhere,” the theme of the American Institute of Geosciences (AGI) Earth Science Week 2024 (October 13-19), explores the many ways that Earth science is conducted by various types of people and professions in interconnected disciplines to help solve problems for communities and the planet.

NASA studies our own planet more than any other. Researchers study Earth’s oceans, land, ice, and atmosphere, and measure how a change in one drives change in others. Earth observation tools allow for new ways to observe and study Earth's interconnected systems and provide long-term data records of how our planet evolves to support community solutions and global stewardship. Visit the resources in this month’s Earthrise issue to explore all the spaces Earth science touches.
