| | Last Lunch at Standish Grille | | |
Many hearts were saddened on Saturday, May 17, 2025, when Ye Olde Standish Grille closed its doors for the final time. I formed a luncheon group more than 20 years ago that met at the Grille on Wednesdays. The original group consisted of: the late Sally Aldrich (Postmaster at Elmwood P.O.), the late Bette Murphy (teacher at Central school), Carol Owen (long-time employee at the Collector-Treasurer's office), and me (editor/proofreader, Draper Lab in Cambridge, MA). As the group grew, we decided to meet every Wednesday at the Grille. As the years went by, we lost some members but gained new ones. Caroline Pratt has joined us for the past year.
The EBHS class of 1954 has held many reunions at the Grille. The original graduating class had 50 members. Six members attended the 70th reunion on June 8, 2024.
Richard O'Leary and his crew provided us with excellent meals over the many years. We couldn't have had a better waitress than Shelby O'Neil, who always greeted us with a smile and put up with some of our nonsense! She's the best!
Since its closing, our group has been meeting at various local restaurants. We are waiting for the new owners to complete their renovations and open Treehouse Tavern in that spot. At our final meal at the Grille, I took this photo of Carol Owen, who has lived her entire life in East Bridgewater.
Respectfully submitted, Betty (Belknap) Stirling
Photo of: Carol (Craig) Owen, who has lived in E.B. her entire life!! Carol and Betty have been closest friends since birth. Their mothers were roommates at the old Goddard hospital when they were born. Betty is one day older than Carol.

Back row: Richard Saccocia of NH, Marilyn (Duffany) Cole of VA; Ned Williams of Cape Cod. Historical Tidbit:
Old Graveyard in East Bridgewater
This graveyard is probably the oldest graveyard in old Bridgewater, outside of the first settlement in West Bridgewater, 1651. Tradition says that the Rev. John Angier, soon after his settlement in East Bridgewater, in 1724, cut the initials of names, and the year of death, one or both, upon many native flat stones then found at the head of many graves; and there is a report that stones have been seen with such inscription thereon, as far back as 1700, and especially one stone bearing date of 1685. The southwest part of this ground was first used for burial, and was, no doubt, part of the first one hundred rods appropriated for burial at this place, as hereafter stated.
Samuel Allen, Senior Deacon and second Town and Proprietors' Clerk in Bridgewater, 1683 to 1702, lived on the east bank of Matfield River, near where the Branch railroad crosses the river. He owned a large tract of land on the east side of that river, bounded, northwesterly, by Nicholas Byram, and northeasterly by the lands of Whitman and Harris, including the plain, the common, the burying-ground, and land on both sides of the road, to the brick store and depot, and some further west.
All the burying-ground, and a very large part of the common at the meeting-house, was given and conveyed to the East Precinct, or committees in behalf of said Precinct, by the Allen family by sundry deeds. Only one deed covers the burying-ground, and that is the deed of Matthew Allen, Jr., to Thomas Whitman, Edward Mitchell, and Hugh Orr, a committee of the East Precinct, dated November 20, 1759, recorded April 19, 1760, in Plymouth Registry, book 46, page 55.
This deed conveys "121 rods of land adjoining land for many years improved for a burying place, given by my father, Samuel Allen, late of Bridgewater, containing 100 rods." The deed recites that the land allotted for a burying-ground is but small, and in time, like to prove too scanty for the use of the inhabitants, and that the whole land.

Climate Can-Do: Eat Local! The Advantages of Being a Locavore
Better Quality Food - Local produce is usually picked within 24 hours of being sold. These are fresh foods, minimally processed and picked at peak ripeness. Key nutrients like potassium and magnesium, phosphorus, and vitamins C and A can be found at higher concentrations. Antioxidants and polyphenols found in fruits and vegetables are particularly beneficial for your heart, blood, brain, gastrointestinal/digestive, and vision health. A shorter supply chain means fewer steps from farm to plate. Produce ripens naturally, resulting in higher nutrients and better flavor.
Physical and Social Possibilities- Buying from farmers in your community brings increased physical and social opportunities, as well as learning about giving your body quality fuel for increased quality of life! Financially, local farmers support our communities and will be here to provide food should there be infrastructure damage if we buy from them now.
Health - For safer consumption locally, it's easier to find food free from harmful pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers that are standard in conventional mega-farming practices. Small-scale farms usually don’t use chemicals or harmful packaging, as their foods don’t need to travel far. Growers are usually open to discussing their practices, so don’t hesitate to ask.
Price? - For bargain shoppers, the key to finding more affordable options is to buy products in season and support smaller farms. Farmer’s Markets are also often competitively priced.

Ecology: 'the branch of biology that deals with the relations of organisms to one another and to their physical surroundings."
How is our relationship with other organisms and our physical
surroundings?
I think: “Am I in a healthy relationship with nature?"
Each week for 17 years, your BuzzAround has connected and
shared goodness, to pool our energy around projects that make our lives
better.. our homegrown initiatives, our local democracy in action.
And I have seen that work. I have seen organizations and small
businesses grow and blossom with the press we have given them. We shared
news of ways people can get involved, and they did!
Local actions effect us locally; it's the same with our water,
rivers and air; our soil and farms. These things are effected by the food we
eat, the plastic and products we use and the construction we approve.
I am a firm believer that a collective of people can make change.
And that the survival of our habitat is THE MOST important thing that needs our
attention.
