DISTRICT 207'S BEST

APRIL 2024 - EXTRA-CURRICULAR INVOLVEMENT

Penelope Gumila

It was no surprise to our staff at Maine East that Penelope was winning an award of this type; she is well-known as a committed student leader that is dedicated to our school community.  What’s special about Penelope, however, is that it was not readily apparent which extracurricular involvement earned her this honor.  That’s because Penelope has shared her talents with athletics, athletic training, and multiple clubs and activities over the years.  She is being awarded not for her extraordinary performance in one area but rather her outstanding commitment to many areas.

MAINE TOWNSHIP EDUCATION FOUNDATION HOSTS ANNUAL BENEFIT

The Maine Township High School (MTHS) Foundation’s annual benefit will raise funds to help establish a School Based Health Center (SBHC) at Maine West, supplementing the SBHC at Maine East that has been serving all students in the District for more than 20 years. Through a partnership with Advocate Lutheran General, students from all schools in the district use these centers for both primary medical and mental health screenings and treatments. The need for school-based health care has been rising steadily in recent years, and dramatically since the pandemic. Funds raised will also provide ongoing support for teacher and student grants, career explorations, state and national academic competitions, scholarships for graduating seniors, and alumni engagement opportunities.

The annual benefit will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17 at Fountain Blue Banquets in Des Plaines. Purchase a ticket, donate or buy raffle tickets at www.mthsfoundation.org.

The 18 students that participated in the State Conference are:  Angelina Liew, Anida Murati, Anjali Patel, Asal Al Shammari, Daniel Omarov, Dusan Milovanovic, Emilia Konopka, Jahnavi Patel, Lexia Lukose, Mai Vu, Palak Shroff, Rosalyn Haido, Samiya Patel, Samiyah Ansari, Tasmia Iqbal, Zunain Sami and Zoya Muzammil.  Alma Hamza, Alhamza Hamza and Theresa Behnan also qualified for State but did not attend.

Seven of the students earned Top 10 Spots in the State for their categories - one student earned Top 10 in 2 different categories!
