Lessons I learned from my parents
By Kip Miller

One thing that has helped me know how to be a good father to my children is the relationship that I have with my own parents. Both of my parents were and are faithful Christ followers. They showed us by example what it meant to live out that faith on a daily basis, and they made sure that their children grew up with as great a knowledge of God as they could pass on.

We attended a small church called Morgan Memorial Baptist Church near Poe Mill Village in Greenville, South Carolina. As a good Southern Baptist family, we were in church every time the doors were open, and that was often. My dad served as a Sunday school teacher and was on the deacon board, serving many times as chairman. His devotion set the standard for my own commitment to serving in the local church.

My parents also taught me about tithing. They believed in giving ten percent of their income to the church. One day, I asked my dad if I should tithe on my net income or the gross. He replied, “Do you want God to bless you on the net or gross?” Well, that was my answer.
