What I Learned From Charles Dickens
Every year after Thanksgiving, I break out my old copy of the Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol. It is one of my favorite holiday stories, and I reread it every year. I have had my copy for well over 30 years. It is the same paperback version that I used when I taught English; it is full of highlighted vocabulary words and notes in the margins.

Reading it each year not only helps me to get into the holiday spirit, but it brings back fond memories of helping teenagers to see the timeless lessons that Charles Dickens described when he first published the tale in 1843. Even if you may not celebrate Christmas, in Dickens' words there is a lot of wisdom that I feel we can all use this holiday season.

Celebrating Careers of Service Toward Others
Recently, we celebrated the careers of three very dedicated staff members that will be retiring in December. Thank you Karen, Angela, and Tresa! (pictured L to R)
Join us in celebrating the retirements of three staff members that have helped guide and grow Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Schools through the years! Congratulations to Ms. Karen Ross, Ms. Angela Ward, and Mrs. Tresa Durkin on your retirements.

Karen Ross is an educator by nature and joined Eastland-Fairfield in September 2014. She has held her role as the Adult Workforce Development ASPIRE Coordinator for eight years, and truly believes in the importance of ASPIRE's mission to educate and prepare adult students while assisting them to achieve their goals no matter their initial ability or background.

Angela Ward was first hired by EFCTS in April 2000 as its Transitions Coordinator for Adult Education and dedicated the next 22 years to helping connect adults looking to grow through additional education. She quickly elevated to Adult Education Supervisor a year after her hire and in January 2009 was named the Director of Adult Workforce Development.

Tresa Durkin did not just build her career in education but also in career-technical education and through Eastland-Fairfield. In September 1989 she was hired as the Business Office Technologies instructor at Fairfield Career Center. She taught in the classroom through 2000, also instructing the Business Management and Computer Support Technology programs before taking a role as a Career Pathway Specialist. Since 2001, she has also served as the District's Coordinator of Off-site Programming, Director of Off-site Programming, Director of Student Services and Public Relations, and Director of Satellite Programs & Career Services.

Thank you for your dedication, service, and passion that has fueled Eastland-Fairfield through the years. We wish you many restful, joyful days ahead and the best of luck in your next endeavors.
Students Take an Unconventional Field Trip to Share Knowledge
Senior Yakob Getu (Whitehall Yearling) sits with a resident of The Inn at Winchester Trail to teach her how to navigate her iPhone.
Eastland-Fairfield students in the Programming & Software Development program recently took a field trip … but not to a place you would typically think of when you hear the words “field trip”. They visited a local assisted living facility where they strengthened their customer service skills by helping answer technology-related questions.

Mr. Derek Roeth, the instructor that coordinated the visit said, “I knew there was an existing gap in technology understanding for residents of assisted living facilities, so I thought that would be a good place for us to start.”

Seniors Moussa Nikiema (Groveport Madison) and Yakob Getu (Whitehall Yearling), and junior Susmita Adhikari (Reynoldsburg) shared with us their experience teaching as well as learning from the residents of The Inn at Winchester Trail in nearby Canal Winchester.
Cosmetology Students Donate 200+ Items to Local Toy Drive
Eastland-Fairfield students continue to amaze us with their generosity this holiday season. Students from the Cosmetology program at Eastland Career Center recently collected and donated more than 200 toys and books that were donated to the Afterschool Child Enrichment (ACE) program.

Since returning from Fall break, students have been busy gathering these items which will now be donated to benefit children in four different local elementary schools, two in Groveport and two in Reynoldsburg.

ACE was founded by former Ohio State basketball player, George Reese, who played for the Buckeyes between 1998 and 2000 before playing professionally overseas.

Thank you to our students and Cosmetology instructor Ms. Aries Owens for being champions of generosity toward our communities.

FCC to Host Spring Arts and Crafts Bazaar
Mark your calendars for a first-of-its-kind event for Eastland-Fairfield and Fairfield Career Center. On Saturday, May 6, 2023, Fairfield Career Center will be hosting its inaugural Spring Bazaar to support two of its career-technical student organizations (CTSO). Lovers of arts, crafts, unique goods, and food trucks are invited to come to Fairfield Career Center (FCC) where indoor and outdoor booths will house local vendors and yummy goodies. Enjoy a day with family or escape to your hobby happy place where you can connect with local artisans.

If you are an artist, goods or food truck vendor (or know of one and would like to spread the word) we still have indoor and outdoor space available! Visit www.EastlandFairfield.com/SpringBazaar or click the link below for information on how to become a vendor and event information.

Proceeds from vendor space will support the students in FCC chapters of SkillsUSA and Future Farmers of America.
Program Spotlight: Robotics & Automation
Click to watch what could be a glimpse into your future learning experience.
New to the programming lineup and available in Fall 2023 is the Robotics & Automation program!

Industries, professions, and jobs are evolving in our communities. Companies are looking to make processes more time- and cost-efficient, which is where the world of automation comes in. Prepare yourself for a career in which you get to be a part of the next (or perhaps ongoing) industrial revolution.

Our Robotics & Automation program is a hybrid of mechanical, electrical and computer engineering. Professionals in this field are designing and creating robotic machines that drive industries such as manufacturing, mining, aviation, and transport.

This two-year program will serve an industry that provides many options to pursue. It will ready students for additional educational paths or careers as technicians and engineers.

Recently during sophomore tours, students from local high schools had a chance to talk with our business partners from Advanced Technologies Consultants and Integrated Systems Technologies. Check out the demo from that visit in the video below and a preview of the program in the video above!
