Transitions
One of the specific skills that strong writers use is transitional words and phrases. In writing, transitional words and phrases provide links between and among ideas expressed in the text, and they help the reader to better understand the author’s message.

Like good writing, life is full of transitions as well. Transitions may be planned or unplanned. And, sometimes those transitions can be difficult such as the loss of a job or a diagnosis. But many bring joy - like the birth of a child, marriage, or a new house. And some transitions can bring us the excitement of opportunity along with the sadness of loss.

Life's commas pause time enough to allow us to reflect, give gratitude, and even look forward to what is next.
Around Eastland-Fairfield
Multimedia Students Shine at BPA Regionals
Students from the Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Schools Multimedia satellite program, located at Pickerington High School North, had a highly successful showing at the BPA Region 14 competition. Thirty-one students placed as a regional finalist, 25 advanced to the upcoming state competition, and 17 took first-place honors in their respective events.

The students of the Multimedia program took top honors in seven different individual or team events. Students and teams that finished in first or second place in their event now advance to the BPA State Leadership Conference, which will be held March 9 at the Hyatt Regency Columbus. The 25 individuals that will represent the EFCTS Pickerington North BPA chapter are the most ever in a single year, as reported by instructor Mr. Doug Rider.

ECC features 40 BPA state qualifiers
Of the more than 60 students that competed at the Business Professionals of America (BPA) regional competition for the Eastland Career Center chapter, 40 of those students will be moving on to the next level. This includes 17 students that were tabbed first place in the region for their event.

In late January, students from across Region 14 gathered in one place to showcase their skills as part of the annual BPA local competition. The Eastland Career Center chapter had a highly successful showing which included 17 first-place finishes, 19 second-place finishes, 40 different state qualifiers, and 77 students that placed fifth or better in their respective events.

Programming & Software Development senior Adam Offord (Gahanna Lincoln) will compete in three different events at the upcoming state conference.

FCC's SkillsUSA Competition Reps Announced!
Senior Kole Mustard took third place in the Carpentry event at the regional round, qualifying him for SkillsUSA states!
Fairfield Career Center held its local SkillsUSA competition and now has its slate of students ready to represent the school at the SkillsUSA regional competition set for March 4, 2023, at Eastland Career Center. A total of 21 students have earned the privilege and have chosen to compete at the next level of the SkillsUSA competitions, while a handful of students also qualified for the state competition.

Some of the events held during the local competition are referred to as “straight to state” competitions in which the winner will advance past the regional competition and automatically qualify for the SkillsUSA Ohio state conference on April 25-26, 2023.

Senior Kole Mustard (Canal Winchester, Construction) had a tight turnaround for his regional competition after placing first overall in the local carpentry event. On February 17, he was the first to compete in the regional round and proudly reported back a third-place finish, which now qualifies him for SkillsUSA states.

With Nerf, it's all academic!
When we received an invitation from science/physics teacher Mr. Jeff Cashin to stop by Eastland Career Center knowing that Nerf was involved, we weren't sure what to expect. For some of us, the work our students were doing using miniature Nerf guns was flying over our heads like the darts they were firing.
Who knew that Nerf could be the centerpiece of a science lesson? Our students were measuring the distance and force by which the Nerf guns were firing to calculate critical data that would then be used to compare what was reported to what they measured. All of this was a lesson in calculating percent error with their findings.

Students timed the duration their darts spent airborne as well as their firing angle, which greatly impacted their results. Then using a measuring wheel, they found the distance each dart traveled, which gave them all the data they needed to complete their calculations. While there was an element of math and science involved, it was a fun lesson to take part in.
EFCTS Presents, Focus Fridays! (Part 2)
In our last newsletter, we provided an inside look at a Focus Friday event at Eastland Career Center. Now, let's see how Fairfield Career Center went! Remember, Focus Friday is our way to build students up outside of their lab or classroom. All wings of the FCC campus were bustling with activity. Available activities included real job interviews, a job recruitment fair, learning teamwork through the game of Euchre, and different labs that normally do not cross paths getting the chance to interact with each other. Some students chose sessions in which they learned more about their personality type and how it translates into their leadership skills, while others chose sessions based on personal finance and planning. One session even used the popular board game "LIFE" to demonstrate the impact of choices, budgeting, and just how real life can show you twists and turns.

At the end of the day, the Cosmetology program hosted a fashion and hair show that invited the entire school to attend. Many styles, genres, and eras were represented and even included short performances relevant to their wardrobe. The final event brought all the students back together for a test of their knowledge that related to an ongoing Black History Month celebration through a live game of Jeopardy.
The grand finale of Focus Friday was the Fashion and Hair Show, presented by the Cosmetology program. Different genres, eras, and styles were on full display and the crowd got WILD cheering their friends as they walked the aisle.
Our friends from the City of Gahanna shared some important interview tips, including "don't be afraid to open up about yourself". Our presenter opened up by sharing photos of her dog with students!
Pre-Nursing students stepped into the Criminal Justice lab for an exercise in leadership and teamwork that involved being strung together with a chain of handcuffs.
At Eastland-Fairfield, we believe in educating and growing the WHOLE student. We value the traditional academic courses and the specialized skills they learn in their labs, but in what other ways can our young people develop? Focus Fridays is an initiative that has grown from within our campuses, driven by the passion of preparing our students in other areas of interest or need. The programming is unique between the Eastland and Fairfield campuses, and held one Friday each month (when possible).
Program Spotlight: Teaching Professions now at FCC!
It's not often that we begin a program spotlight with a "did you know?" type introduction. But ...

Did you know ... that the Teaching Professions program is expanding!? In Fall 2023 a new section of Teaching Professions will be created and housed at Fairfield Career Center, giving students another outlet to pursue a pathway into the world of education.

Students in the Teaching Professions program will get a hands-on experience learning about and developing their own learning environments in a variety of classrooms and spaces. While in the program, students will be exposed to different learning styles, tools used in the classroom, and environments. Field trips and job shadow opportunities will help students navigate this pathway and begin building the educational career they want to pursue, all while having the chance to earn college credit. Students will not just learn about the classroom, but they will also be INSIDE the classroom engaging with students on a limited basis.
Students get to learn the tools of the classroom and use their creativity to inspire others!
Teamwork makes the dream work when accomplishing a task or building a positive learning environment!
A story can fuel a dream, provide an escape, or inspire others to make a great impact.
Teaching Professions is a two-year high school program designed to set the foundation of a career in an educational environment. Students that choose this pathway commonly find themselves becoming teachers, professors, administrators, school counselors, or in other support staff roles. The Teaching Professions program is currently located in Clark Hall at Gahanna Lincoln High School and will begin a new section at Fairfield Career Center next Fall.

While the priority period has concluded, students can still apply for any of EFCTS's 30+ programs for the 2023-24 school year. Apply today!
