Women's History Month and It's Importance
March is Women’s History Month. Why is this important to me? To women? To you?

Women are making things happen AND we have work to do. There is plenty of data and history that shows progress over time and women's impact in our society, now.

As a woman in a male-dominated role, I can say that I feel welcomed, valued, and supported by male and female leaders in my field. I would not be where I am without the support of a wonderful husband, outstanding male leaders, and staff members who said, “You can do this.” And yet, I am cognizant of the need to continue to promote girls and women into fields that are predominantly male and into leadership roles in ALL fields.

Female Pre-Engineering Duo Creates Foot Brace Prototype for Local Nursing Facility
Jaden (left) displays the prototype for the new foot brace she and her Pre-Engineering classmate Rebeca (right) created. Rebeca shows off the old brace they used to inspire their creation.
Jaden Smith proves you’re never too young to make a difference in your future industry. A junior at Groveport Madison High School and a Pre-Engineering student at Eastland Career Center, she job shadowed a bioengineer — her desired field — at the Embassy of Woodview, an assisted living and rehabilitation facility, in November of 2022.

While there, a physical therapist showed her the braces they use on patients, but one, in particular, stood out to her. It was a foot brace designed to help patients with heel conditions, but the staff member told her they rarely use it because of the brace’s poor design.

A lightbulb turned on in Smith’s head, and she asked if she could take the brace with her and develop a new prototype. She recruited fellow junior Rebeca Forsyth (Pickerington High School North), also a Pre-Engineering student, to help her tackle the project.

See how Jaden and Rebeca are using their newly-acquired skills to find their passion, serve their communities, and inspire the next wave of female engineers!
From Athlete to Intern: ECC Student Builds Website for Local Special Olympics Chapter
Hamilton Twp. senior Sophie Coffenberry proudly shows off the her website that she built using HTML for the Groveport Special Olympics chapter.
Sophie Coffenberry, a senior at Hamilton Township High School and a Programming & Software Development student at Eastland Career Center, has been involved with the Groveport Special Olympics since 2017.

She recently went from active member to intern thanks to the skills she’s learned as a student in the Programming & Software Development program. Penny Hilty, Coordinator of Groveport Special Olympics, said the organization is on Facebook and has stories in the paper on occasion, but since the chapter started eight years ago, she has always wanted a website to help spread awareness and recruit more athletes. When Coffenberry approached her with the idea, it was an easy “yes” from Hilty.

So Coffenberry went to work.

Find out Sophie's why to take on this project and how it will help her as she builds the Special Olympics website, and her future.

Habitat for Humanity House Coming Along Nicely
Click on the image above to see wall #3 lifted into place!
With the weather now providing a few more days on which to work, our Construction students are getting into a groove on their first Habitat for Humanity home construction project. We visited our students on March 21 to see how it was going. With the sun shining and the temperatures rising, it was a gorgeous day to lift the third wall up, begin installing headers, and prepare for the next phase, truss installation.

Whether walls are going up or coming down, the learning process is happening, always. Our students are getting to work with area contractors and members of the Habitat for Humanity - Fairfield County, applying what they know and picking up additional skills from the experts along the way. Our friend, Robert from Habitat, also shared some insights as a potential employer, instructing students what to and not to do on the job site if you want to put your best foot forward when preparing for your future job.
Thank you to instructor Mr. Dennison for letting us visit the construction site and to our friends at Habitat for Humanity for their continued support and guidance with this incredible project!
Goin' up! No job is too tough or too high for our Construction students.
And now ... we work on the insides!
Thank you to our friends at Habitat For Humanity for teaching and guiding our students through this project!
