What Happens If ... ?
If you have ever spent much time around little children, you know that they have a never-ending flow of questions.

Why is the sky blue?

When will we get there?

Where does the bath water go when you pull the plug?

Why aren’t there any more dinosaurs?

The list can go on and on because we are born naturally curious beings, and we want to know. As we grow, our questions become more complex and more about our everyday lives.

Here is another question that is worth asking right now: What happens if we don’t invest in education and training for in-demand fields such as plumbing, electrical, firefighting, education, auto technologies, construction, and nursing? And what happens if we don’t have professionals in these fields who will teach the next generation? Let’s think about it.

Whitehall Student Receives $40,000 Scholarship and Internship Offer from Amazon
Yakob Getu (left) was named an Amazon Future Engineer and awarded a $40,000 scholarship plus an internship opportunity with Amazon.
Yakob Getu, a senior in the Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Schools Programming & Software Design program, has been named an Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship recipient and will receive $40,000 over four years to pursue a degree in computer science or engineering at a college of his choice. He is one of 400 students across the country to receive the award along with a paid internship offer at Amazon after his freshman year of college to gain hands-on, practical work experience with mentorship from Amazon leaders.

Yakob, who came to Eastland-Fairfield from Whitehall Yearling High School, was notified of this honor by his instructor during a surprise celebratory announcement. His classmates, Eastland Career Center, and district staff members joined together to celebrate as Yakob opened the Amazon package containing the scholarship and internship offer, a graduation cap cover and sash, and other assorted Amazon items.
Approaching the Finish Line, Hunter Young is Already Prepared For His Next Race
We first introduced you to Hunter Young in May of 2022. A third-generation sprint car racer, he was injured in an accident in 2021 and spent 25 days in the burn unit at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. We reconnected with Young, who is up to big things in all aspects of life as he gears up for graduating this spring.

Young, a Teays Valley High School student in the Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Schools’ Pre-Engineering program, is having quite the senior year and is looking forward to summer, not because there is a break or vacation on the horizon, but because the opportunity of a lifetime awaits.

This summer, Hunter will use his engineering background and education while working as an intern for JR Motorsports. Racing fans probably already know who is the star behind JR Motorsports, but in case you are not, this means that Hunter will be working alongside none other than retired NASCAR racing star, Dale Earnhardt Jr.
NTHS Welcomes 41 Eastland-Fairfield Students from Satellite Programs
On Tuesday, April 11, 2023, 41 Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Schools students were honored as the newest members of the National Technical Honors Society (NTHS) satellite program chapter. The ceremony to honor the newly inducted NTHS members was held inside Clark Hall at Lincoln High School in Gahanna.

Students from seven different programs and six different high schools were recognized for their combination of scholastic achievement and character. The first NTHS honorees from the Eastland-Fairfield Sports Medicine program were also among those in this induction class.
Interim State Superintendent Visits EFCTS
Pictured: Juniors in the Electrical lab at ECC show Dr. Siddens how they have learned to cap wires and install lights as a part of their program.
Eastland-Fairfield had the privilege to welcome Interim State Superintendent Dr. Stephanie Siddens for a visit to the Eastland and Fairfield Career Center campuses on April 13. Dr. Siddens brought members of her team to join administrators for a walking tour that highlighted a handful of programs in which our students are excelling. Dr. Siddens asked students about what they are currently learning, how it's preparing them for their futures, and learned about the opportunities EFCTS is uniquely providing students. Some of the labs Dr. Siddens visited included Automotive, Electrical, Pre-Engineering, Construction, Welding, and HVAC. As part of the tour, the Culinary Arts program treated Dr. Siddens, business partners, and accompanying staff to a seven-course meal to get a taste of all the program's creations.
Thank you to Dr. Siddens and her team for taking the time to learn more about Eastland-Fairfield, ask our students questions about their programming and futures, and support career-technical education with their visit.
ECC Promotes Positive Life Choices through Health Fair
In another installment of Focus Friday at Eastland Career Center, staff and students created a day in which positive, healthy life choices were at the center of learning. Mr. Beau Fealty, ECC School Nurse, led a year-long effort to build a day full of educational and physical activities that promoted healthy living to students. Last Friday, the first ECC Health Fair was hosted all across campus to allow students a fun way to learn about and engage in positive, healthy choices.
Distracted Driving Simulation Lab
We are very proud to support the Maria Tiberi Foundation and Maria's Message with our driving simulation lab. On this day, waves of students came by to learn about distracted driving and just how easy it is to take your eyes off of the road, and what can happen in that split second. There was standing-room only and lots of students waiting to get a taste of the experience delivered by this lab.
Medical Escape Room
Teams of 3 or more students had 10 minutes to locate clues around the room that spelled out a message. The message ultimately led them to a key to unlock a box that provided the patient’s diagnosis. If they found all 5 clues and were able to discover the diagnosis, they “saved the patient” and escaped the room!
Watch Your Mouth: Oral Health
Students and staff from the Pre-Dental program provided health tips and information regarding good oral health. They included lessons on proper brushing, flossing, and care techniques to help keep your breath smelling fresh and teeth and gums looking clean. Students also learned about the consequences of poor oral hygiene, as well.
Splash the Staff
Have you ever just needed to throw something? Sometimes, it's good to just let it out. You know, for our mental health. So we gave our students buckets of water balloons and challenged them to Splash the Staff! Students first had to hit a distant target with a water balloon slingshot. A successful hit then awarded them a water balloon to throw at a staff member. SPLASH! If they answered a health-related question correctly, they may get another chance!
... and MORE!
Additional activities and opportunities were presented to students throughout the day. A small Wii Sports Tournament allowed indoor physical activity (it's not as easy as you'd think); an outdoor cornhole tournament was held in the courtyard; and some students brought out a football and volleyball to help keep the blood circulating. Congratulations to junior Ryan Sheets (Fairfield Union) and staffer Mackenzie Mast on the win! Local vendors from health-related organizations came to promote healthy living through their products, services, or information.
Program Spotlight: Adult Facilities Maintenance
Watch this video to get an inside view of the Facilities Maintenance adult program
We all value having a lot of different skills. Working to keep an entire industrial facility running efficiently requires just that, and the Eastland-Fairfield Facilities Maintenance adult training program is where a person can become a true "Jack or Jill of All Trades."

Students in this program are learning about the principles of heating, cooling, electric, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and welding in order to build a comprehensive personal toolbox that they can take into the workforce. The facility students are learning in is equipped with top-of-the-line tools and equipment to complete small and large tasks in a variety of settings, and some are even personally crafted by the instructor, himself. Students will learn how to fix the most common issues that impact a facility as well as hone in on problem-solving skills to navigate the unique issues that arise.

The Facilities Maintenance program offers a unique "Learn and Earn" opportunity to students, allowing them the opportunity to pair up with an approved business partner, learn more about their craft while on-site, work real jobs, and earn a paycheck. What better way to pave your way into your next job than to a paid audition as you learn?
If you would like to learn more about the adult Facilities Maintenance program and the Learn and Earn opportunities available, click the button below or join us for Adult Information Night on April 27 at Eastland Career Center. There, you can meet Mr. Stump, ask your questions, tour the lab, and make the first move toward your new career!
