Dr. Kimberly Pietsch Miller is the superintendent and CEO of Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Schools.
Engagement is in the Details
On August 10, the staff of Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Schools gathered for our annual convocation to kick off the 2022-23 school year. The theme this year was Reframe and Engage. After two years of operating through the frame of a pandemic, it is time to change our frame or lens and engage in our work in such a way that we make all of our decisions based on what is best for our students and their learning.

It seems that many of us are realizing that we can’t keep operating the way we have over the past two years. While we had to make adjustments in the face of a pandemic, it’s time to fully focus on engaging with one another in meaningful and supportive ways.

So what does that mean exactly?

10TV's Dom Tiberi Delivers Maria's Message at ECC
Car accidents remain the #1 reason for loss of life for those ages 5-24, and #3 among all age groups behind heart disease and cancer. These numbers personally touch local sports anchor Dom Tiberi, which is why he has brought Maria's Message to EFCTS. On Thursday, Sept. 8, Mr. Tiberi visited Eastland Career Center to address students about the dangers of distracted driving.

Mr. Tiberi's message was simple: focus on the road. He shared how distracted driving took his own daughter in a deadly car accident nearly nine years ago, and how simple measures can be taken so that no one has to ever share in that pain. He shared that the new Driving Simulation Lab at ECC will help combat distracted driving and educate students on all of its consequences.

Lt. Short of the Groveport Police Department joined Tiberi in speaking as both a father and law enforcement officer that has responded to numerous accident scenes to reveal a different side of distracted driving's effects. Together, students and staff joined Tiberi in taking a pledge to focus on the road and left with an additional note: you are all loved. His addresses marked the 139th and 140th addresses of Maria's Message since starting the Maria Tiberi Foundation.

Basic Police Officer Training Welcomes New Cadets
Law enforcement continues to evolve, just like the technology that powers it. On Sept. 6, new Basic Police Officer Training commander, Tim Voris, welcomed a new class of recruits to the program. More than 20 individuals will begin their 10-month journey to become peace officers and earn OPOTA certifications in order to take their careers to another level.

Joining the cadets, business partners, and members of the Board of Education in attendance were members of the Logan Police Department, who had brought on of their new Tesla Model Y police cruisers to display. The City of Logan purchased two Tesla Model Ys, some of the first in the state to be converted for police use. Cadets were invited to explore the new Tesla Ys capabilities as part of its introduction to the program. The BPOT program will begin in mid-September.
FCC NTHS Chapter Earns Silver Star of Excellence Award
The Fairfield Career Center chapter of the National
Technical Honor Society (NTHS) has been named as one of the 2022 recipients of the Silver Star of Excellence Award. This award is presented annually to NTHS chapters who distinguish themselves through their consistent excellence in Career
& Technical Education and is a reflection of their commitment to community service, chapter advancement, and active civic involvement.

During the past school year, Fairfield Career Center’s NTHS chapter has participated in food drives, donut sales, and educational activities. Their members have collected approximately 3,000 boxed and canned goods for a local food pantry.

Additionally, the students raised over $1,200 to give to the next class of NTHS students to be used for membership fees and educational field trips.

Congratulations to our NTHS inductees and advisors!
