Thank a Veteran
Friday, November 11, we celebrate Veterans Day. This important and annual event was first observed in 1921 when an unknown soldier was buried in Arlington National Cemetery at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month. This day became known as Armistice Day and similar services took place in England and France celebrating the end of World War I, the “war to end all wars.” Sadly, we know that was not the case. However, Americans continued to set aside time to remember and thank our military veterans, and Veterans Day became an official holiday when President Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming November 11 as Veterans Day in 1954.

I believe most everyone understands that serving in times of conflict and war is difficult for service members and their families. And of course, as originally designed, Veterans Day is a time to remember and thank those who made the ultimate sacrifice. But as we observe this Veterans Day, consider that for those serving in the military it requires sacrificing some of their freedom every day.
Around Eastland-Fairfield
A Liberty Union Senior is Taking Eastland-Fairfield Firefighting Program by Storm
Audrey Farmer (center) is Eastland-Fairfield's first female Firefighting student and comes from a line of firefighters in her family.
Audrey Farmer may be the first female in Eastland-Fairfield's Firefighting program, but it’s not this fact that makes her unique; rather, it’s her humble nature and true passion for public service.

Audrey, a senior from Liberty Union High School, chose Eastland-Fairfield because of the speed at which she could earn her credentials.

“Having the opportunity to get my certification while still in high school was too good of an opportunity to pass up,” she said.

Now the third member of her family entering the firefighting field, Audrey loves knowing she is following their paths toward success.
FCC Students Hold Food Drive to Benefit Byron Saunders Foundation
On Wednesday, November 16, students in the National Technical Honors Society (NTHS) Fairfield Career Center chapter went from lab to lab collecting canned and non-perishable food items in its annual Holiday Food Drive. Motivated by competitions between the lab programs, students and staff donated more than 1,700 items that will be used to help feed families this holiday season!

All items were boxed and prepared to be donated to the Byron Saunders Foundation for distribution in our communities. Thank you to all students and staff that contributed in this wonderful act of generosity!

Between Fairfield Career Center and Eastland Career Center students, the two campuses were able to collect and donate more than 2,500 food items in less than two weeks' time, combined. Well done to all who contributed. Our students and staff are amazing!
Members of the Fairfield Career Center chapter of National Technical Honor Society proudly stand by the collection of food items that will be donated to help families in need this holiday season.
Captain of the Classroom: Teacher Reaches Home at Eastland Career Center
From the time he was a toddler, Scott Pinoni knew he wanted to be a professional baseball player. What he wanted to do after playing baseball was not so certain. Now instead of hitting home runs himself, Mr. Pinoni is helping students at Eastland Career Center knock it out of the park in the classroom.

Pinoni, a Columbus native and graduate of Worthington Christian High School, is in his 13th year teaching special education English at Eastland Career Center. Previously, he was employed with the Educational Service Center of Central Ohio (ESCCO), which is where he was first introduced to EFCTS and its opportunities to impact young people. But before all that, he was a draft pick of the Kansas City Royals following a highly successful career playing at Duke University.

Read about Mr. Pinoni's winding path through minor and Independent League baseball and how it helped him toward a career in education at Eastland-Fairfield.
Hands-On ... Government?
With the country in the thralls of mid-term election season, what better time to learn about how the voting process works than with a hands-on experience in local and state government? While hands-on learning is normally associated with our labs, the U.S. Government teachers at Fairfield Career Center led an interactive exercise in which students had the opportunity to see how a polling location is assembled and operated, the process by which an election is initiated, and then administer a mock election that involved students from different classes and labs. Students had the opportunity to research statewide issues and candidates at various levels of government to help understand the process and administer their own election.

To add to the experience, students met with a member from the local Board of Elections that spoke on how votes are counted in Ohio and answer questions regarding the voting and election process. What better way for new and soon-to-be voters to learn about an integral process than with first-hand experience? Thank you to U.S. Government teacher Ms. Levacy for organizing this opportunity!
Program Spotlight: Nail Services
Upon stepping into the Nail Services salon at Fairfield Career Center visitors are greeted with smiles, hellos, and an overwhelming amount of artwork and creativity. Different projects were happening all over the room, but seniors Jayonna Briggs (Hamilton Twp.) and Mya Hill (Groveport Madison) demonstrated the differences between two different nail services, gel tips and dip tips. In case you didn't know, they may look similar to the untrained eye but their application, lasting power, ease of removal, and nail strength are all different, as the duo explained. We watched as Jayonna used her classmate, Ema, as her client for the gel tip job while Mya used a model hand for her powder dip training. After cleaning Ema's cuticles and intense preparation, Jayonna went through the entire process of applying, trimming, flushing, buffering, and coating Ema's nails before curating and lathering them with cuticle oil to produce the final product. Mya showed us the dip-on and pour-on methods for her powder dip application. Both Jayonna and Mya completed these jobs in about an hour, adding to the 200 combined hours they need to be ready to head to their board testing in the spring.

Nail Services is a one-year, senior-only program that is currently located at Fairfield Career Center. In 2023-24, the program will move to Eastland Career Center.
Ema (Teays Valley) played the role of client and model. She displays her beautiful new gel tips that were completed by her classmate, Jayonna.
Jayonna (Hamilton Twp.) begins applying one of the color coats to her client's new nails.
Rorie Sheets (Pickerington Central) is demonstrating some very detailed artwork in her gel tip training.
Mya (Groveport Madison) is very focused on her powder dip training.
