Over the past two years I have heard the phrase “get back to normal” over and over again. I have even used it myself. In our culture, we seem to have a propensity for believing that the way things used to be were better. We regularly use phrases to suggest if we could just turn back the clock, life would be better or more comfortable. I’m sure you have heard or used expressions, such as:

The good old days.

Return to a simpler time.

Once upon a time.

But we cannot live there, and we should not waste the present or squander the future wishing for the past to return.

Passions drive recent Criminal Justice graduate into a new chapter of life

By the time Justice Wills was a sophomore at Canal Winchester High School, she had the credits she needed to graduate. This left her with a unique set of choices: finish her secondary education by taking a number of elective courses, enroll in a career center, or graduate early.

She opted to complete as many elective credits as possible — until she discovered the Criminal Justice program at Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Center (EFCTS). As a child, she was was drawn to the hit television show “Hawaii Five-O”, which piqued her interest in detective work. That served as one of two passions that held true over time and helped lead her to Fairfield Career Center.

Graduate Bitanya Gudeta is Prepared to Take Flight

In 1998, M’Lis Ward became the first Black woman to become a captain for United Airlines - and the first Black woman captain for any commercial passenger airline in the United States. According to Sisters of the Skies, today, less than 1 percent of pilots are Black women. Numbers like that fuel Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Schools senior Bitanya Gudeta to soar high in her pursuit to become an airline pilot.

David Sells named Aspire HSE Teacher of the Year

On Wednesday, June 22, Eastland-Fairfield instructor David Sells was named the Adult Options Teacher of the Year in the High School Equivalency category. The announcement was made at the Adult Education Event, held by the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Department of Higher Education at Columbus Downtown High School.

David is the EFCTS Aspire Student Success Coordinator and an HSE program, soon entering his ninth year with the District. He manages Aspire instruction and Aspire business at the Fairfield County Job and Family Services location in Lancaster. David has long been a favorite of students. His impact reaches beyond the classroom or distance education settings as he works with caseworkers and county court officials to serve those most underserved individuals.

David graduated from Groveport Madison High School, earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Franklin University and a Master of Arts in Theological Studies from the Rawlings School of Divinity.

A Dream Fulfilled: ECC Teacher Completes Boston Marathon

Runners run, even if in pain and for 26.2 miles on one of the sport's most difficult terrains. Despite injury, new surroundings, and uncertain experiences, Eastland Career Center social studies teacher, Ms. Chelsea Osgood was determined to make a dream come true. Osgood had the experience of a lifetime when she completed the 136th Boston Marathon this past April. Read about her opportunity and how she fared!

Basic Police Officer Training students turn into detectives

The Class of 2022 Basic Police Officer Training program is winding down and with just a few weeks to go, the members of the course are switching gears to a CSI-like learning environment. Officer Taylor from the Ohio Attorney General Office Special Agent Bureau of Criminal Investigation served as a guest instructor and brought a few items from the office to showcase to the BPOT students. They investigated how to lift fingerprints, isolate footprints, and other investigative techniques used at crime scenes.
