Dear Eastview Families and Friends,
Happy New Year and Welcome Back!
I hope that you found time to relax and enjoy the holiday break. With the start of the second semester in January, Eastview will enter into the time when our students will demonstrate their continued growth. The second iReady testing window will begin the week of January 13th and results will continue to be used to help enhance learning opportunities and planning. In addition, students will continue to dive deeper into their curriculums. Hands-on learning activities and inquiry based projects will be used to enrich student learning and enhance their understanding.
I continue to be amazed every day at what our students are mastering and able to do. I look forward to seeing them continue to soar throughout the second semester. I am beyond proud of their accomplishments and am grateful to be a part of their learning process each day.
Thank you for sharing your children and for being an active part of the Eastview Family. I am looking forward to the great things that are to come in 2025.
Wishing you happiness and health in the New Year!
Sincerely,
Katie Stanton
Principal

SCHOOL-WIDE EXPECTATIONS MATRIX
In an effort to bring consistent expectations to Eastview, staff will be going over Eastview's School-wide Expectations Matrix with all students in the first month of school. This matrix will provide students with a visual reminder and detailed explanation of what the expectations are for all students in various locations throughout the building. Staff will provide multiple opportunities for students to be taught and re-taught these expectations throughout the school year. We look forward to bringing consistency to our students and to provide them with opportunities to continue to enhance their learning environment.

Dear Parents/Guardians,
As we head into January 2025, our goal is to continue to keep you informed about our implementation progress with ACT 20 in the state of Wisconsin, and particularly, at Lake Geneva Schools. Listed below are a few updates:
What is ACT 20?
Act 20 is a reading law that moves the state toward phonics-oriented literacy instruction. ACT 20 received bipartisan support and approval from the state’s education department. The proposal aligns WI with dozens of other states that are reconsidering their approach to literacy instruction.
What are the five requirements of ACT 20 and how has Lake Geneva Schools responded?
- Science-Based Early Literacy Instruction in both universal and intervention settings that is systematic and explicit in all of the following: phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, phonics, building background knowledge, oral language development, vocabulary building, instruction in writing, instruction in comprehension, and reading fluency.
How are Lake Geneva Schools meeting requirement #1?
We have adopted Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts in grades 4K-5th grade, which is a state approved curriculum that meets all of the skills and knowledge requirements of the law.
- Prohibited use of the Three-Cueing/MVS (meaning/structure/visual) Instruction: Three cueing is a model that teaches a student to read based on meaning, structure, syntax, visual cues, and memory.
How are Lake Geneva Schools meeting requirement #2?
We have removed reading and writing workshop model practices, Leveled Literacy materials, and running records with assigned reading levels.
- Beginning in the 2024-2025 school year, the law requires schools to assess and communicate early literacy skills of students in 4K to third grade using the state mandated screener, AIMSweb+.
How are Lake Geneva Schools meeting requirement #3?
Three times a year, Lake Geneva Schools is using AIMSweb+ to screen all students in grades 4K - 3rd grade.
- Under the bill, all 5K - third grade teachers, principals of schools that offer grades 5K to third, and reading specialists are required to receive professional development training in science-based early literacy instruction no later than July 1, 2025.
How are Lake Geneva Schools meeting requirement #4?
All principals, 4K - 5th grade classroom teachers, reading specialists, special education teachers, English Language teachers have been trained in the science of reading early literacy instruction by completing the Top Ten Tools (DPI approved training).
-
ACT 20 requires schools to create personal reading plans (PRP) for each student in 5K through third grade who is identified as at risk based on the AIMSweb+ screener. Under the law, at risk is defined as a student who scores below the 25 percentile on AIMSweb+.
How are Lake Geneva Schools meeting requirement #5?
Beginning at the end of January 2025, personal reading plans will be created for all students who qualify for plans. PRPs will be communicated with families and reviewed regularly with progress monitoring data.
As always, we will continue to update you on our progress as we implement support to help all of our students to learn and grow as readers. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your building principal and/or myself.
Sincerely,
Erin Zigler
Director of Curriculum and Instruction

Dear Parents/Guardians,
This month students will be concluding their learning on the topic of empathy. In addition, they will begin to learn about Perseverance in their Character Strong curriculum. One way to think about perseverance is "pushing yourself through challenges and obstacles." It is important to develop tools that help students work through challenges in order to grow in moments of feeling like we want to give up or can't do something.
Perseverance is one of three traits that students will focus on throughout the year that helps students "Be Strong." Throughout the school year, students will be developing skills like focusing, organizing, and goal-setting.

When to Send Your Child to School
or Keep Them Home?
At Lake Geneva Schools, we know that regular attendance is key to academic success! Being in class daily helps students build strong habits, stay engaged, and gain valuable social skills. However, we also want to maintain a healthy, germ-free learning environment.
Use this guide (https://bit.ly/healthyLGS) to help decide when your child should attend school or stay home to recover. If your child has a fever over 100.4°F, vomiting, or diarrhea in the last 24 hours, it's best for them to rest at home. For minor symptoms like a runny nose, if there’s no fever, they’re ready for class!
When in doubt, contact the school health office, and let's work together to keep everyone healthy and learning!

Whom do I contact with a question or suggestion?
Lake Geneva Schools’ communication protocols help promote direct, open, and respectful interactions so that we quickly and efficiently resolve problems and concerns. The communication protocol starts with the staff member closest to the situation, as that person usually has the most information. However, at times, additional personnel are required to resolve specific concerns.

We are once again asking that children bring their own individual snacks and water bottles. Students are welcome to bring store-bought birthday treats and special event snacks. We do have fill stations at the drinking fountains throughout the building so students can refill their water bottles. No worries if your child does not have a water bottle, as the drinking fountains will be accessible, as needed.

One of the biggest ways you can help your child succeed this school year is to make sure your child gets to school on time each and every day. The evidence is clear: children with good attendance are more likely to be successful in school. High attendance rates are linked to high student achievement. Every day counts, and missing school even 10% of the time has a significant negative impact on reading and math achievement as children progress through school. We want to ask for your commitment to making sure your child attends school every day possible this year.
When your child does have to be absent from school, we ask that you communicate with us about the absence. When your child will be absent, you have two communication options:
Call Mrs. Grelyak in the main office at 262-348-6000 to speak with her and/or leave a message by 9:00 AM each day. Please do not email her, for if she is absent no one will see the message.
You may log in to PowerSchool to record the reason for your child’s absence. Please see the directions linked here.
We also ask that you let us know about pre-planned absences, including vacations and doctor appointments, ahead of time. When missing school for an appointment, it is always encouraged that you get documentation of your visit to provide to the school as verification. When leaving for an extended vacation (3 or more days), we also ask that you complete the Planned Absence Request Form. This form can be obtained from Mrs. Grelyak in the office.
Lastly, please also note that, as a school, we are required to track student attendance and support families with any attendance issues or concerns. Our highest priority is to have students at school, and we are willing to help in any way we can. As a parent, it is important to understand the current State of Wisconsin attendance laws stated below:
A parent or guardian may only excuse their child/children for 10 days during the school year, including doctor visits. After these 10 days, an absence can only be excused if the school is provided with a note from a doctor, dentist, court, etc. The same guidelines apply to excessive tardies.
Once a student has been absent for 7 days (excused or unexcused), parents/guardians will receive a letter noting the absences as well as procedures for the next steps to improve attendance.
Thank you in advance for your commitment and support to your child’s attendance this school year.
