March 2025

NEWSLETTER

Engage. Educate. Empower.

Dear Eastview Families and Friends,

Welcome, March!

It’s hard to believe February has already come and gone! As we step into a new month, let’s also prepare for the changing spring weather. Students are already catching a bit of spring fever—you can see their excitement as they eagerly head outside for recess! However, we still have some chilly and windy days ahead. Please remind your child that our guideline for going without a coat at recess is a "feels-like" temperature of 60 degrees or higher. Wearing a jacket can also help fend off those lingering springtime illnesses.

This month, our students will begin taking the Wisconsin FORWARD Exam, which assesses their skills in Language Arts and Math, as well as Science and Social Studies for our fourth graders. Testing will begin the week of March 17 and continue into April. Our teachers have already started preparing students with practice questions and test-taking strategies. We look forward to seeing our students put forth their best effort and to using the data to measure their continued growth.

I continue to see the hard work of our students paying off—not only academically but also in their maturity and independence. Their sense of responsibility shines in the hallways, classrooms, lunchroom, and playground. They understand expectations, make thoughtful choices, and learn from their mistakes. Students are leading by example, demonstrating the values they are learning in Character Strong in their interactions with each other and their teachers. It’s exciting to see how these foundational skills will continue to grow and shape them.

Please take a moment to celebrate your child's progress! They have worked hard—not just as students, but as kind and responsible individuals—and that is something to be truly proud of.

Warm regards,

Katie Stanton

LAKE GENEVA JOINT #1 OPERATIONAL REFERENDUM - VOTE APRIL 1

On Tuesday, April 1, 2025, our community will vote on a proposed non-recurring referendum for the Lake Geneva Joint #1 School District. If the operational referendum is not approved, the Lake Geneva Joint #1 School District will face a significant budget shortfall. To address this, the district may be forced to consider and implement a combination of, but not limited to, the following measures:

1. Abrupt Closure of an Elementary School

  • One of the three elementary schools will close beginning with the 2025-2026 school year.
  • Grade levels and school boundaries will be reorganized, and students will be reassigned to the remaining two schools.
  • Families will lose the option of school choice within the district and must attend their designated home school to balance school sizes and capacities.

2. Staff Reductions Resulting in Larger Class Size

  • 16-20 full-time positions (including teachers and essential staff) will be eliminated for the 2025-2026 School Year.
  • Class sizes will exceed the district’s target range, impacting individual attention and learning quality.

3. Reduced Opportunities for Students

  • Academic programs and extracurricular activities will be scaled back or eliminated.
  • In-town busing will be discontinued, increasing walking distances and bus ride times.
  • Families will face higher student fees.
  • A modified academic calendar will result in fewer instructional days, which will reduce the number of days students are in school learning.

4. Deferred Maintenance and Safety/Security

  • Repairs and updates to critical infrastructure (e.g., security cameras, doors, emergency communication (radios and phone systems)) will be delayed, increasing safety risks.

5. Increased Community Costs

  • Community fees for facility use will rise (youth groups/sports, community partners, etc.).
  • Reduced facility availability to save on operational costs.

Even with these cuts, the district’s financial stability will remain a challenge, deeply impacting the quality of education and community services. If this April 2025 referendum fails, the Lake Geneva Joint #1 School District will have to go back to the community for a future operational referendum.

SCHOOL-WIDE EXPECTATIONS MATRIX

In an effort to bring consistent expectations to Eastview, staff will be going over Eastview's School-wide Expectations Matrix with all students in the first month of school. This matrix will provide students with a visual reminder and detailed explanation of what the expectations are for all students in various locations throughout the building. Staff will provide multiple opportunities for students to be taught and re-taught these expectations throughout the school year. We look forward to bringing consistency to our students and to provide them with opportunities to continue to enhance their learning environment.

THE SOAR AWARD

Each month, Eastview students will nominate fellow Eagles who exemplify Being Kind, Being Strong, and Being Well for the SOAR Award! This year's focus will be on the characteristics that students will be learning about in their Character Strong curriculum. Students who receive the award will be recognized on our morning announcements, will be highlighted in our monthly newsletter, and will receive a certificate honoring their positive contribution to the culture of Eastview.

SOAR Award recipients are not necessarily those students who excel academically or in extracurricular activities. With this award, students are striving to recognize peers who continue to follow school-wide and classroom expectations, and who exhibit values that make a positive difference in our school and community. These are students who demonstrate exceptional character but never expect recognition. They are members of our Eastview Elementary community who are seen as positively impacting the culture of our school on a daily basis.

This month, the recipients of the SOAR award have shown that they continually demonstrate what it means to Persevere. Congratulations to Luca Ahearn, Daemon Alexander, Olivia Cataldo Richardson, Erick Chavez Rodriguez, Eva Craine, Lorelai Etchison, Sofia Hernandez Soto, Ari McCoy, Hannah Moreno Olivares, Ivy Rorig-Gerblick, and Aleyanna Solori.

CHARACTER STRONG

Dear Parents/Guardians,

This month students will be concluding their learning on the topic of Honesty. In addition, they will begin to learn about Cooperation in their Character Strong curriculum.

One way to think about Cooperation is working together to reach shared goals. This applies to how we work together at home and at school.

Cooperation is one of three traits that students will focus on throughout the year that helps students "Be Kind." Throughout the school year, students will be developing skills like perspective-taking, conflict resolution, and leadership.

EASTVIEW ANTHOLOGY WINNERS .....

We are pleased to present the talented students whose works will be featured in this year's Lake Geneva Anthology - Lorelei Etchison, Ava Kolb, Cassidy Lubeno, Will Polyock, and Fenix Spencer. Will's artwork will also be included in the Southern Lakes Anthology. Congratulations to all of you!

WHEN TO STAY HOME

When to Send Your Child to School

or Keep Them Home?

At Lake Geneva Schools, we know that regular attendance is key to academic success! Being in class daily helps students build strong habits, stay engaged, and gain valuable social skills. However, we also want to maintain a healthy, germ-free learning environment.

Use this guide (https://bit.ly/healthyLGS) to help decide when your child should attend school or stay home to recover. If your child has a fever over 100.4°F, vomiting, or diarrhea in the last 24 hours, it's best for them to rest at home. For minor symptoms like a runny nose, if there’s no fever, they’re ready for class!

When in doubt, contact the school health office, and let's work together to keep everyone healthy and learning!

Superintendent Dr. Peter Wilson will host a series of “Coffee with the Superintendent” events throughout the upcoming months. These informal gatherings provide an opportunity for parents and community members to engage in open discussions about Lake Geneva Schools.

COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL

Whom do I contact with a question or suggestion?

Lake Geneva Schools’ communication protocols help promote direct, open, and respectful interactions so that we quickly and efficiently resolve problems and concerns. The communication protocol starts with the staff member closest to the situation, as that person usually has the most information. However, at times, additional personnel are required to resolve specific concerns.
