Lake Geneva Joint #1 School District Mission Statement

Engage. Educate. Empower.

TOGETHER WE CAN!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope this message finds you well. We wanted to take a moment to inform you of an important shift in our approach to literacy instruction at Lake Geneva Schools. We believe that this change will significantly benefit your child's reading and writing skills, and we want to ensure that you are well-informed about it.

In recent years, education has seen advancements in our understanding of how children learn to read and write effectively. Based on the latest research, best practices, and changes in Wisconsin state legislations, we have decided to transition from a Balanced Literacy approach to a Structured Literacy approach.

What is Structured Literacy?

Structured Literacy is an evidence-based approach to teaching reading and writing that is highly systematic, explicit, and sequential. It focuses on teaching the foundational skills of reading, including phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling, vocabulary, and comprehension, in a structured, explicit and comprehensive manner.

Why the Transition?

We believe that Structured Literacy provides several key benefits for our students:

1. Stronger Foundations: Structured Literacy ensures that every student receives a solid foundation in the essential skills needed for reading and writing, which is crucial for their long-term success.

2. Inclusivity: This approach is inclusive and adaptable, making it effective for all students, including those with diverse learning needs.

3. Consistency: Structured Literacy provides a consistent framework for instruction, which can be particularly helpful for students who may have experienced gaps in their learning.

4. Research-Based: The decision to transition is rooted in the latest research and best practices in literacy instruction, ensuring that we are providing the most effective methods to support your child's literacy development.

What to Expect

As we transition to Structured Literacy, you can expect the following changes:

1. Instructional Approach:  Our teachers will be using Structured Literacy principles to guide their reading and writing instruction.  Each day, students will receive whole group instruction in phonics, comprehension, writing, grammar, spelling, and fluency.  Teachers will be using small group instruction, for small portions of the literacy block, to differentiate instruction.

2. Materials: We will be using new instructional materials that align with the Structured Literacy approach.  This year, we will be using the UFLI Phonics Program in grades 5K - 5th grade.  This universal instruction will take place daily for 30 minutes.

3. Professional Development: Our educators will receive ongoing professional development to ensure they are well-equipped to implement Structured Literacy effectively.

4. Progress Monitoring:  We will continue to monitor your child's progress closely and make any necessary adjustments to support their individual needs.

We understand that change can be challenging, but we are confident that this transition will have a positive impact on your child's literacy development. We are committed to working closely with you to ensure a smooth transition and to address any questions or concerns you may have along the way.

If you have any questions or would like more information about Structured Literacy, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher, our reading specialists, your building principal, or myself. We value your partnership in your child's education and are excited about the opportunities that this new approach will provide for their growth and success.

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to working together to help your child achieve their full potential in literacy.

Sincerely,

Erin Zigler

Parents, one of the most important ways in which you can help your child succeed this school year is to make sure he or she gets to school, on time, each and every day. The evidence is clear: children with good attendance are more likely to be successful in school. High attendance rates are linked to high student achievement. Every day counts, and missing school even 10% of the time has a significant negative impact on reading and math achievement as children progress through school. We want to ask for your commitment to making sure your child attends school every day possible this year.

When your child does have to be absent from school, we ask that you communicate with us about the absence. When your child will be absent, you have two communication options:

  1. Call Mrs. Grelyak in the main office at 262-348-6000 to speak with her and/or leave a message by 9:30 AM each day.
  2. You may login to Powerschool to record the reason for your child’s absence. Please see the directions linked here.

We also ask that you let us know about pre-planned absences, including vacations and medical/dental appointments, ahead of time. When missing school for an appointment, it is always encouraged that you get documentation of your visit to provide to the school as verification. When leaving for an extended vacation, we also ask that you complete the planned absence request form LINKED HERE.

Lastly please also note that, as a school, we are required to track student attendance and support families with any attendance issues or concerns. Our highest priority is to have students at school, and we are willing to help in any way we can. As a parent, it is important to understand the current State attendance laws stated below:

  • A parent or guardian may only excuse their child/children 10 days during the school year. After these 10 days an absence can only be excused if the school is provided with a note from a doctor, dentist, court, etc. The same guidelines apply for excessive tardiness.

  • Once a student has been absent for 10 days (excused or unexcused) parents/guardians will receive a letter noting the absences as well as procedures for next steps to improve attendance.

Thank you in advance for your support and your commitment to your child’s attendance this school year.

Student Chromebook Procedures

All of our students will be assigned a Chromebook this year. Students will be taking their Chromebooks home at the end of each school day and will return it the following school day.

Please plan for an appropriately sized backpack to accommodate the Chromebook. Chargers will remain at home. Students will be required to charge the Chromebook each night prior to bringing it to school the next day.

Additionally, we ask for your help in speaking with your child about how to care for their Chromebook. Please refer to the following Chromebook Care information:

  • When unplugging, do so gently.
  • Carry the Chromebook closed and with two hands.
  • Keep your water bottle on the floor to avoid water damage. In your backpack, keep your water bottle in a safe spot away from your Chromebook.
  • When not using the Chromebook, close it to save the battery.

Thank you in advance for your assistance in guiding your child to take good care of this valuable classroom resource!

Meet Mr. Tost

Librarian and STEAM instructor

Greetings, Eastview Families! I’m excited to show you what’s been happening in the library these past few weeks. Not only are Eastview students reading lots of books, but we are busy learning how to work in teams to solve problems. Our first STEAM challenge was to build a lookout tower that would serve as an early warning system for flash floods. The design teams met, researched famous tower designs, created sketches, and built prototypes. Not every tower stood tall, but that’s okay… the learning process was the focus.

A bit about myself… I’ve always loved books and teaching science in particular, so the Librarian/STEAM instructor is a great fit for my skills and passions.

For the past 16 years I taught fourth and fifth grade within the Joint 1 District. As I step into my 17th year with Lake Geneva Schools, I am excited to bring the world of reading, computer literacy, and STEAM classes to the students of Eastview. I hail from Pennsylvania where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Criminology and Psychology. After leaving the world of youth camping, I earned my Master of Education from Aurora University and entered the classroom. When I’m not teaching, you might find me pounding on my drum set, strumming away on a guitar, hiking, biking, and metal detecting. Of course, there’s reading and writing mixed in as well. I have four children, ages 12, 10, 7, and 5, that keep their mom and dad loving life.

Remember what Leonardo da Vinci once said, “Learning never exhausts the mind.”

School attendance is very important, and we encourage families to make sure their children are in school as much as possible. However, children who are sick need to stay home for their well-being and to prevent others from becoming sick.
