V-55 Mechanical Room

The mechanical room on the V-55 is a feat of engineering. Incorporating a dedicated space for ship systems in the aft section of the cabin space enables easier access and additional dry storage that is unmatched in this class of center consoles. Let’s take a look at how we designed and executed this masterpiece.

Our R&D Department, alongside Design & Engineering, created a full-scale plywood mockup of the mechanical room to configure the space in the best possible way. This allowed the team to use Styrofoam blocks cut to the size of the components to move and manipulate the parts multiple times before finding the best place for it to be mounted. The final layout of over 40 components was not an afterthought as having good service accessibility and leeway to all the systems was imperative.

From the mechanical room access door (which is located on centerline in the aft sleeping quarters,) the aft bulkhead is home to several optional systems including the watermaker control panel and pumps, Garmin control module and ARID bilge system. Behind the access hatch is the fuel pickup and transfer valving.

Outboard, on the port side, is where the 15kW Fischer Panda diesel generator is located. Above is the ventilation fan. Beneath are the optional watermaker and Spot Zero filters, along with the generator raw water strainer. Mounted on the forward bulkhead are the fire suppression system and the generator coolant bottle.

Most of the power distribution is located on the starboard side of the mechanical room. Inside the battery box (that is built in-house by our fiberglass specialists) is the house battery bank. To its right is the water heater. The two 60 amp 12V DC battery chargers are located under the ventilation fan on the outboard wall. The forward bulkhead is home to the battery distribution box, breaker sub-panel, and two electrical outlets.

Whether it is servicing your ships’ systems and components, retrofitting new equipment or simply detailing the mechanical room; the well-designed and thoughtful layout will make any task seem like a breeze when this much attention to detail is taken.
