See how a greener business model can be successful at our Sustainable Business Tour on June 26.
Greetings!

We are very excited to announce that the City of Steamboat Springs is now officially a member of the Compact of Colorado Communities. Congratulations! We are looking forward to the next steps that the City takes in their work to mitigate climate change.

But, it's going to take more than City actions to reduce our community's collective carbon footprint. Through all of our programs and events, YVSC is providing opportunities for everyone to make a difference. Here's a short list of ways to curb your carbon emissions but read on to find out more:

Happy summer!

5 tips to shrink your event footprint
Summer event season is here, and large public events can generate a tremendous amount of waste. Do your part to reduce waste with these tips:

  1. BYOB (bottle, that is): Bring a reusable water bottle to avoid single-use plastic bottles.
  2. Find the bin: Properly dispose of items in recycle and trash bins. If you don’t see a bin right away, ask someone. If you spot an aluminum can or plastic bottle that didn’t make it into a recycling bin, be a waste warrior and put it where it belongs! (Paper with food on it must go in the trash.)
  3. Leave no trace: Pack out your waste. Although some food waste is biodegradable, please don’t leave it on the ground. It’s still litter and is harmful for native animals to eat. Also, be sure to dispose of cigarettes in safe, appropriate areas. It’s already a dry summer, and the fire danger is rising.
  4. Spork it: Bring your own cutlery, cloth napkin and/or to-go container. Encourage coordinators of events you attend to use environmentally-friendly tableware. Styrofoam is both an environmental and public health concern!
  5. Bike it: Ride your bike, walk or take the free bus to events. You’ll be glad you did when everyone else is waiting to get out of the parking lot.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, REFUSE Single-use Plastics
Did you know that more than 40% of plastic is used just once, then tossed? Plastics of all kinds are choking our waterways and our environment, but you can be part of the solution. Join the worldwide Plastic Free July campaign and choose to refuse single-use plastics.
Go plastic free beyond July
If you’d like to go beyond the month with your plastic-free pledge, consider signing YVSC’s Climate Action pledge and choose two actions, such as saying no to single-use plastics, remembering your reusable bag when you shop or eliminating plastic in your home, to reduce your carbon footprint.
Wanted: Climate Warriors
Are you looking for ways to get involved in local climate action? Help fight climate change by volunteering for YVSC. We need volunteers for a wide variety of projects, such as installing LED lightbulbs for seniors, making recycled craft projects with kids at the Farmers’ Market, hanging event posters, outreach and education at events and more.
Make climate action the norm
On May 12, YVSC helped more than 400 households and 35 businesses recycle everything from electronics to skis--keeping 30 tons of valuable materials out of the local landfill.

YVSC’s fall Recycling Drop-Off is slated for October 27. You can help make this local climate action opportunity a success by supporting YVSC with a tax-deductible donation.
