We hope you've been enjoying the flavors of the season! Now is the time of the year when you can literally eat the rainbow. You'll find just about everything you need at the farmers' market so be sure to stop here before visiting a grocery store. Plus shopping at the market is always fun!

Tomorrow we're excited to host the Homefries Kid's Cooking Class! Swing by the lawn to see what local foodie Susan Sink is whipping up with the young chefs. You'll surely get some inspiration for a meal you can cook this week, too!

We're happy to announce that the Durham Farmers' Market has a brand new websiteWe've been working hard to create a beautiful and useful website that everyone can enjoy. And we want to give a huge THANK YOU to the team at Registered Creative for creating such a fantastic new website for our community.

Also, you've probably heard about the challenges that farmers' markets across the country are facing with the closure of the Novo Dia group, which is the company that we use to process SNAP/EBT transactionsOne of our values at the Durham Farmers' Market is to ensure fresh, local food is available to everyone in our community. We are proud to accept SNAP/EBT and Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers.  We have been working closely with our partners at RAFI  and the Durham County Department of Public Health to address this situation. We want the community to know that there will be NO disruption in service at the Durham Farmers' Market. We will continue to accept SNAP/EBT and customers will have the same experience at the market. In addition, all SNAP transactions will be matched up to $10 with our Double Bucks program. We are committed to ensuring that our community has access to fresh, local food. For more information, please e-mail us.

See you tomorrow!

Sincerely,
Mary Yost

Become a friend of the
Durham Farmers' Market!
The Durham Farmers' Market has been a community destination in downtown Durham since 1999 thanks to YOU, our loyal customers and supporters. Over the years we have grown the market and continue to provide Durham with an event that nourishes the soul of our wonderful city.  You may not know that the market operates primarily off of the weekly stall fees from our farmers and artisans. Despite this modest budget, we are constantly working to make fresh and healthy food accessible to our entire Durham community.  We want to continue expanding the offerings of our market and need your help to make this happen.  The Friend of Durham Farmers' Market program provides an opportunity for you to invest in the future of the market by making recurring or one-time contributions via PayPal or check. Examples of how we will use the funds include expanding our children's programming, continuing our outreach efforts to underserved communities in Durham, and developing our nutrition education programs. We invite you to invest in your market. Please continue stimulating our local food economy and join our effort to build a stronger, healthier Durham. Thank you!

This week I am featuring passion flowers which bloom in July. These exotic flowers look like they arrived from another planet! They can be found growing on vines in ditches in our area. Duke Gardens also has some in the White Garden and climbing porch posts.

I have a wide selection of photographic greeting cards featuring iconic spots around  Durham, the OBX, Flowers, Fantasy, Animals, Whimsy, and astronomical images. If you don't see a subject you are looking for, just ask - I may have it.  This week's image is of a passion flower, of course!

Many of my photos can be previewed on my Smugmug website I will also have enlargements in 11x14" and 16x20" sizes and can make posters upon request. Drop by for a look and a chat!

Honeygirl Meadery
Honeygirl Meadery is a small urban meadery in downtown Durham, making an ancient craft beverage for modern days. Mead is essentially wine made from honey, with many different styles that include additions of fruits, flowers and herbs. Our meads are hand-crafted libations made in small batches, using both local and global true source honey, local fruits, herbs and flowers. They are naturally gluten free. Our downtown Durham Tasting Room is open on Fridays from 3-7 pm, Saturdays from 1-6 pm and Sundays from 1-5 pm.

This week we will be sampling: the newest release of our Orange Blossom Mead, a lightly sweet traditional mead made with orange blossom honey.

We will also be sampling our Blueberry Mead, made with local blueberries and NC wildflower honey. This mead has subtle plum and tart berry notes, balanced with honey sweetness. Pairs nicely with aromatic cheeses, salami, and dark chocolate.

And we will also be sampling our Apple Cyser Mead , this is the mead version of a hard cider, and ours is a dry-style cyser with crisp, tart apple highlights. A blend of four apple varieties from western NC contributes both tart and sweet cider notes.

We will also have bottles available of our Lavender Mead , an infusion of fresh-dried local lavender flowers in our orange blossom traditional mead ; and Strawberry Mead , made with local strawberries and NC wildflower honey.

I created this design from a story my wife Annamarie told me about growing up in East Tennessee. For a couple of summers during her childhood, the kids of her town participated in a scientific study. They gathered fireflies for scientists who planned to use them in medical research. Each evening, just after twilight, she and her friends would go out with their nets and find as many fireflies as they could, and then transfer them to large canning jars. Once a week, the scientists would meet the children at the school parking lot, weigh the insects they had caught, and pay them accordingly. One month, Annamarie was recognized as the second-best firefly catcher in Anderson County, Tennessee. Her name was in the paper and everything. To recreate the firefly design, I dyed the garment yellow, then dropped warm wax onto it. When it was overdyed blue, and the wax removed, I had a green garment with a bunch of firefly "glows." The jar was silkscreened on some garments, batiked on others. The insects were added by rubberstamping the final product.

We are hand stretching our Fresh Mozzarella every week during the summer to enjoy with all the great tomatoes. We always hope tomato season lasts as long as possible for eating Caprese Salad and BLTs. Use the Mozzarella for melting as well. Add to pizza with our Mild Italian sausage, in eggplant dishes, Zucchini lasagna, or melt over sautéed peppers for Bruschetta. Our Fresh Mozzarella is milky and rich, made with milk from our Animal Welfare Approved Jersey cow herd. The yellow color comes from the carotene in the grass our cows graze.

We also have Calvander, Hickory Grove, fresh Dairyland Farmers, Carolina Moon, Danziger, and a little of our cows' milk Pheta. Calvander, which is a smooth and rich version of Asiago, is good for a cheese plate, salads, pasta, or for homemade pesto. Dairyland Farmers is smooth, tangy and meltable; use in tomato sandwiches, with hot pepper jelly, or in vegetarian pita sandwiches. Add Pheta to salads or taboulie. Add Carolina Moon, which is similar to a Camembert, and Danziger, which is a creamy washed rind cheese, for snacking or a cheese board with crusty bread and fruit. Hickory Grove is our popular semi-firm cheese with savory, toasty flavors, aged about 2-3 months; use for snacking or grilled cheese sandwiches. Let Hickory Grove and our other aged cheeses come to room temperature for the best flavor.

Enjoy BLTs with our Molasses Cured Bacon or Jowl. Cook these on a slightly low flame so that the molasses doesn't scorch and enjoy a treat for dinner. Add to tacos or shrimp and grits.  Cured Pork Jowl is at an introductory price of $6.00 per pound Sausages include Mild Italian, Smoked Andouille, Chorizo, Polish, Sage and Maple Breakfast Links, and Mild Country Breakfast.  All our pork is from our pigs who drink the nutritious whey from cheese making. This makes the meat tender and the sausages are made with the hams which makes them extra meaty. Don't forget your cooler and thanks for support local food at our market!

Stop by and visit with Jack and select some delicious bison meat for weeknight family dinners or for gatherings with family and friends on the weekend.  Sandy made a quick and delicious bison dinner this past week using her Christmas gift, "The Spiralizer". Instead of noodles she created Zoodles with fresh zucchini. She boiled the zoodles for 2 minutes, drained and covered them with bison spaghetti sauce she made using Prego sauce with mushroom and ground bison. Quick and easy.

Caballo Rojo Coffee
My name is Gabriela Kavanaugh and I am owner and roaster for Caballo Rojo Coffee, roasting locally here in Durham. My grandfather was a leading coffee roaster in Venezuela and I wanted to continue this family tradition in my local community. My goal is to create moments involving coffee that connect the international community,  that provides us with coffee, with our our local community. We are excited to be able to foster this vision by being at the Durham Farmers Market, providing you with cups of brewed coffee and bags of whole bean coffee. See you at the market!
