Live Long: Diet, Exercise, Acupuncture and ?Pills?

Greetings, greetings!

Please send this email along to any of your friends, family, or colleagues who might be interested in it or my practice!

When thinking about health and longevity, the popular metaphor in business, that of the flywheel is helpful. In business, the flywheel is an effect that occurs when small wins accumulate over time, creating momentum that keeps your business growing.

Likewise with your health. Small changes and habits don't just add. They compound over time. So adding small changes in your habits and diet (in addition to a large compounder like acupuncture) can yield large results over time.

I don't recommend pills when you have other options, but please read on for the latest from the pharmaceutical industry's anti-aging efforts

Keep it Simple. Live Long. The Mediterranean Diet.

I like the Mediterranean Diet approach because it's a flexible diet with many healthy elements and avoids foods we don't need. Easy to follow, sustainable, and realistic. The diet prioritizes

  • whole grains,
  • fruits, vegetables,
  • legumes,
  • nuts, herbs, spices and
  • olive oil
  • fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, sardines and tuna (SMASH fish listed in this blog post good for brain health- mackerel and anchovies added)
  • other lean animal proteins, like chicken or turkey, are eaten to a lesser extent
  • foods high in saturated fats, like red meat and butter, are eaten rarely.
  • eggs and dairy products like yogurt and cheese in moderation And
  • moderate alcohol consumption, like a glass of wine at dinner, is allowed

It cuts the risk of cardiac disease by 25%, has antioxidant effects that help with brain health, and possibly cuts the rates of Type 2 Diabetes.

The possible benefits of natural wine are discussed here. No minimum daily requirement for alcohol, though!

Don't Take My Word for it! Dr. Andrew Huberman Touts the Science Behind Acupuncture

As readers and patients know, I focus on the latest research behind acupuncture to learn and to help reassure skeptical patients that it is a very valid choice

I'm linking to this podcast specifically at the 2:30 hour mark (long podcast!) because Dr. Huberman discusses the fact that the public doesn't realize how much science there is behind acupuncture.

It was great to hear it from a highly credible source! Huberman is an increasingly popular medical "thought leader" and translator of complex medical topics for the public. I've discussed him here with tips on sleep.

In a short video, I emphasize that I see myself as a science translator, an important role in my practice and blog and writing projects.

Longevity: In Search of the Magic Pill

Chinese Medicine has longevity as a pillar of practice. It's long been part of the teachings with certain herbs and acupuncture points to engender a long life. I prefer acupuncture, exercise, sauna, meditation, and other natural techniques to optimize my healthspan. But for those interested in possible future drugs to optimize longevity, you can read about them here. Click on the image for my ebook summary of my chapter on Longevity.

Tension Headaches Gone With Acupuncture

In this study a research group found that 8-weeks of acupuncture treatment for a total of 20 treatments was effective for the prophylaxis of Chronic tension type headache. Further studies might focus on the cost-effectiveness of the treatment.

Saunas, Exercise and Heat "Shock" Proteins

In this blog post, I link to three articles looking at what are called "heat shock proteins." they sound scary, but are actually good for you !! They are produced during exercise and also with heat therapy, like sauna. These proteins protect the heart, help protect the brain from neuro-degeneration, and improve longevity.

Statins and Type 2 Diabetes

Some patients are reluctant to take statins because of the possible side effects. I've been aware of the risks of these meds for years. One particularly worrying side effect is the possibility f Type 2 Diabetes.

. Again, don't take my word for it! Read what Dr. Rita Redberg of UCSF has to say. Remember! Think risk/benefit!

Read about the diabetes risk.

Patient Appointments
I am still scheduling loosely so there is plenty of time between appointments. Hope to see everyone! Call me or email me or Make an Appointment!
