PTSA Legislative Report by Nancy Lawther, MPSH PTSA Legislative Chair:
Legislation Chair Report
MPSH PTSA Board Meeting
October 1, 2020

I.                   Florida Legislature
Governor Ron DeSantis has indicated his interest in calling a one-day Special Session of the Florida Legislature in November after the General Election, but with undetermined date, to consider new legislation, the “Combatting Violence, Disorder and Looting and Law Enforcement Protection Act,” regarding actions taken during public protest that result in property damage or personal injury. The proposed legislation is highly controversial. (Summary attached)

II.                 Elections
The last day to register to vote is October 5, and the last day to request a vote by mail ballot is October 24. Vote by mail ballots will be counted as they are received, and must be postmarked by November 3, 2020. Early voting will be held from October 19-November 1, and sites include the Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay, Coral Gables, and Coral Reef Branch Libraries. Early voting sites will have drop-off boxes for completed vote by mail ballots; voters should bring a picture ID. It is recommended that NO vote by mail ballots be submitted via the US postal service after October 13. Voters who have received vote by mail ballots but who wish to vote in person may turn their ballots in at Early Voting sites or (on the day of the General Election) their home precinct before receiving a new in-person ballot.

Beyond the Presidential race, the ballot will include state legislative races, the Miami-Dade County Mayoral race, the School Board District 3, 5, and 9 races, local municipal races, opportunities to renew (or not) certain judges, state constitutional amendments, county charter referenda, and, depending on the locale, municipal charter amendments.

III.               Census
The deadline to complete the Census form has been extended. A judge moved the deadline past September 30 to October 31, but a subsequent administrative rule has moved it back to October 5.

IV.               Schools Reopening Advocacy
Nancy Lawther spoke at the September 29 Emergency Meeting of the Miami-Dade County School Board regarding Education Commissioner Corcoran’s letter to the Superintendent and Board Chair indicating that if MDCPS did not reopen brick and mortar schools by October 5, date indicated in the District’s approved July 29 reopening plan, it would have to show cause on a classroom-by-classroom basis, or forfeit millions of dollars in funding. She spoke on the basis of National PTA’s position statement on school reopening, and stressed the importance of stakeholder input and local control.

V.                 Resolutions
Miami-Dade County Council of PTAs/PTSAs can adopt resolutions submitted by local units on topics within the scope of PTA. Adopted resolutions become position statements upon which PTA members can advocate at the local, state, and national levels. The process is ongoing, but MDCC PTA/PTSA is likely to consider at least two resolutions at its November Board meeting.

5 Reasons Why YOU Should Join Palmetto High PTSA Today:

1. You’ll Be Connected. Now more than ever communication is key to have a successful 2020-2021 year. Palmetto High PTSA will keep you informed all year on school updates and events. In addition, because we are starting school virtually, it is also the best way to meet and connect with other MPSH parents.

2. You Are Helping the School. When you buy a membership, you are showing that you support Palmetto High and our PTSA, including financially. 100% of proceeds go directly back into our school.

3. It Gives PTA/PTSA Legislative Power. Local, state, and national PTSA/PTA are constantly advocating for our children and our schools in legislative matters, and your membership fee contributes to their cause.

4. You Are Your Child’s Role Model. By joining the PTSA you are showing that you are interested in your child’s school and their education is important to you.

5. YOU Get a Vote. Every PTSA member gets a voice when voting on important Palmetto High PTSA decisions, including budget and spending decisions.

In addition to buying a PTSA membership, we ask the Palmetto Community to consider an additional donation to our PTSA. At the web site above, please review the various sponsorship levels. All Sponsorships include PTSA Membership up to 4 family members.

If you are a business and are interested in Business Sponsorship opportunities, please read our Sponsorship Letter and view our Sponsorship levels below.
Dear Potential Sponsor,

As President of the Miami Palmetto Senior High School PTSA, I am excited to announce that we are initiating what we hope to be a successful Fundraising Program this year in spite of the pandemic gripping our world. We are asking families, local businesses, MPHS alumni, and community leaders to participate. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go directly to fund essential student programs, teacher special projects, and technology improvements, just to name a few.

Our popular annual “Love Our Panthers Event” is now going to be “Love Our Panthers ALL Year Long”! We will still plan to hold our annual community mixer event and Silent Auction in the Spring, should conditions allow, however, this year we are centralizing all of our fundraising efforts to run continuously all year. Banners that promote businesses that support Panther Pride are now included at various levels. These banners can be hung on the sports fence along both 120th Street and 77th Avenue, which is highly visible to local traffic.

Your contribution can make a real difference at a neighborhood school. You may be aware that Florida school funding is among the lowest per capita. Fortunately for our school, the PTSA in conjunction with our extraordinary community we are able to bridge that gap and make Miami Palmetto Senior High School a nurturing and amazing place to educate our teens.

There are several reasons why you may be interested in this program. Most importantly, we are a tax exempt organization and your donation is tax-deductible.

Second, our sponsors are recognized for their support in several ways that are visible to thousands of members of our far-reaching Palmetto family.

We are continuously working with community leaders to promote our amazing, public neighborhood schools. Competing with other school options can be challenging, but we maintain that Miami Palmetto Senior High School is not only an excellent choice, but also one that serves our neighborhood and strengthens our community.
Please consider the various sponsorship opportunities that we offer. If you have any questions or another way that you are interested in supporting our school please do not hesitate to contact either me or the Vice President of Ways and Means, Dana March ([email protected]) or our Fundraising Chair, Zalaysha Lowry ([email protected]).

More information as well as the link to donate, can be found on our website: www.palmettohighptsa.org.

Sincerely,

Gina Vinueza
Miami Palmetto Senior High School PTSA President, 2020-21

Halloween Events in Pinecrest:

The Village is making Halloween a little scary and very safe this year with three events for everyone in the family, including pets!

The Spooky Drive-in Movie Theater featuring the 2019 animated rendition of the classic “The Addams Family” will be held on Friday, October 23 at the Village Green behind the Pinecrest Community Center, 5855 Killian Parkway. Gates open at 6:15 p.m. and the movie will begin at 7:00 p.m., with sound transmitted via an FM radio frequency directly to car stereo systems. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase at Elia Pinecrest in the Pinecrest Community Center.

Be careful when you walk away from the car. The forecast calls for fog, and there are rumors that zombies are making their way back to the Village.

Capacity is limited, so get your ticket early. This is a family-friendly event hosted by the Pinecrest Parks & Recreation Department.

There will be an overflow option for moviegoers who prefer to sit under the stars in socially distant circles for non-vehicle viewing.

Tickets for lawn circles will be available for purchase the day of the event for $20.
Each circle can accommodate a maximum of six people. Personal lawn chairs or blankets for lawn viewing circles are recommended. Social distancing circle participants must utilize FM radio with headphones or an FM Radio app with headphones to listen to the movie.

Tickets can be purchased here:
Stay tuned for details about a virtual Howl-O-Ween costume contest on October 31.
