This Weeks Face:
Meet Mr. Waddell!

Did you ever wonder why the Eblen Charities office is named the Waddell Client Services Center?
Well... Meet Mr. Bill Waddell.
Bill Waddell was born in Burlington but moved to Raleigh early on. It was there he developed a love, that still continues today, for the NC State Wolfpack. In fact their fight song is his ringtone!
In 1950 Bill landed in Asheville where he attended Hall Fletcher and Lee Edwards. While in school he participated in band, played baseball and basketball and it was during this time that he met Coach (Joe) Eblen. Starting work at the age of 10 for May’s Market and B and B Pharmacy, making bicycle deliveries, taught him the value of hard work.
After high school he was offered a spot on a farm team for the St. Louis Cardinals! Seeing the bus on which he would travel and learning the salary was $150 a month, he realized things would be better at home-marrying his sweetheart Mary Dorothy and going to work for Tide Water supply. His decision was the right one. He ended up buying the company and he and Mary Dot will celebrate their 60th anniversary in September!
Upon retiring at 55, Mr. Joe Eblen introduced him to the work of Eblen Charities. Bill Waddell was the community liaison for many years with Eblen. If there was something a client needed, Mr. Waddell knew who to talk to and how to get it done.
When asked about his fondest Eblen memory he said, he “loved them all and it is hard to pick just one! Christmas is probably my favorite though. All the festivities, decorating the toy store, seeing the sponsors bring in toys, and then the families so happy to be able to provide Christmas for their families.” He goes on to say he feels he “is the most blessed man ever born. All the people he has met and the opportunities he has been given. It was never work for me…I love it all!”
