Echeveria

One of the world’s most popular succulents

Echeveria are one of the most popular genera of succulents for home gardeners and collectors forming attractive rosettes of succulent leaves in a wide range of colours and a variety of forms. They are members of the Crassulaceae, the stonecrop family, and look like their relatives the zone 3 hardy Sempervivum or hen and chicks. Since they hail from Mexico, Central America and adjacent South America, they are sometimes called Mexican hen and chicks. They are mostly hardy to zone 9 with one species, Echeveria elegans, hardy to zone 8. They are popular as houseplants and greenhouse plants and look great on their own or in combination plantings with other succulents.

The genus Echeveria includes many different species from which many selections and hybrids have been made offering a great diversity for gardeners. Some species and cultivars produce new chicks freely while others tend to be more solitary or shy to multiply. Unlike Sempervivum which are monocarpic with the mother plant dying after flowering, Echeveria are polycarpic and bloom many times over their lifetimes. Their urn-shaped flowers can be yellow, orange, red, or deep pink or a combination of these colours.

Tips for Caring for your Echeveria

From mid spring through summer to early fall, Echeveria should be grown outdoors in full sun. They can be watered freely as long as you allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Provide a moderate amount of slow release fertilizer or applications of a liquid fertilizer with a higher first number ever two weeks. They can be grown in your standard peat- or coir-based potting mix but added pumice, perlite, or pea gravel is always a good idea for a little extra drainage.

In early fall, it is important to take control of the soil moisture in your pots of Echeveria. Reduce watering and bring your pots under cover out of the rain. Whether they are kept in a greenhouse or as a houseplant for the winter, Echeveria should be kept close to bone dry through the winter months to avoid rot in a cool greenhouse situation or to avoid them trying to grow in the house. In a greenhouse they need only be kept above about 3-5 degrees Celsius as long as their soil is bone dry. In the house, keep your plants in as bright and cool of a position as possible. If, at room temperature, they are kept in lower light and watered, their rosettes can begin to stretch out of their tight form and become unsightly. Your mantra is bright, cool, dry.

They can be moved outside the following spring once night time temperatures are above 5-8 degrees Celsius. Make sure to get your Echeveria gradually used to full sun over a period of two weeks otherwise you might burn the leaves turning them an unsightly white, brown or black.

Echeveria are closely related to Pachyphytum and Graptopetalum which have a similar look to Echeveria and are well worth growing. They have been crossed with Echeveria to create Pachyveria and Graptoveria which offer ever more possibilities for succulent displays and collections.

At Phoenix Perennials, we love Echeveria. We carry many different species and cultivars from conventional selections to the rare and extraordinary. Many are available now in the Succulent Situation Pre-Order for May pick-up or shipping.
