Pax Christi Austria

The spring general meeting of Pax Christi Austria took place on 20–21 March 2026 in Linz. During the meeting, Prof. Olaf Müller from Humboldt University in Berlin delivered a lecture on civil defence, highlighting how it is often misunderstood and characterised by unpredictable effects.

In the context of the debate on the reintroduction of conscription, Müller proposed a form of civilian service focused on civil defence. The topic remains highly relevant in Austria, where individuals can already choose between military and civilian service, while political discussions are ongoing regarding a possible extension of the duration of military service.

They were shown the silos where nuclear weapons are stored in the hillsides and heard that weapons of mass destruction are no deterrent, but as popes and bishops have declared, are “immoral” even to possess.
