Sunburn Hurts... Your Bottom Line

Next year protect your investment early with Eckosil Shield

Solar protectant and abiotic stress solution to reduce sunburn, scald, improve yield, and increase light meat nuts under heat stress conditions.

Eckosil Shield's formulation includes a soluble ortho-silicic acid specifically designed to reduce sunburn, scald, crop abiotic stress, and heat stress. Eckosil goes on clear, works inside the tree tissue, and nuts to enhance plant cell walls, promoting thicker, more heat-resistant tissue and higher UV radiation tolerance. The benefits are reduced sunburn potential, improved light absorption, and more productive trees resulting in greater crop quality and increased marketable yield.

Field Trial Validates Superior Sunburn Protection & Improved Quality

Var. Ivanhoe - Sawtooth Research, Farmersville, CA 2022

2022 Field Trial Results - Summary: Eckosil was applied at 16 fl oz/A in a four-application program, compared to Diffusion at 240 fl oz/A, and Surround at 50 lbs/A. The first application was made prior to the first heat event, and subsequent applications were made every 14 days.

Yield Results

The untreated trees averaged 9,200 nuts per tree with an average nut weight of 12.3 g, corresponding to yields of 9,010 lbs/A. Eckosil treated trees showed 12,250 nuts per tree, average nut weight of 12.8 g, corresponding to 12437 lbs/A.

Sunburn

Eckosil treated nuts averaged 79.4% light meat and 2.9% dark (sunburn damaged). For comparison, the untreated showed 75.4% light and 3.9% dark.

Conclusions

In this trial, Eckosil applied in four applications showed 5% increase in light nuts and 25% decrease in dark when compared with the untreated, demonstrating excellent sunburn control. Eckosil treated trees also showed an increase in nut retention (30% more) while maintaining nut size. Eckosil treated trees showed yields 35% significantly higher yield than untreated plots. In this trial, Eckosil would have returned to the grower $1700/A more than the untreated.

Use Rate and Timing

For best results: Make 2-4 applications prior to heat stress timing. This allows trees time to build the internal heat resistance.

  • Use Rate: 16 ounces per acre
  • Stress & Sunburn: Begin applications 15-30 days in advance of anticipated heat or abiotic stress. Treat every 10–15-days for continued protection.

A Planned Approach to Sunburn & Heat Stress

Unlike most common sunburn protectants that provide a physical barrier, Eckosil works within the plant to develop heat stress tolerance and sunburn reduction. This internal process can take 10-14 days to develop, so applications made 2-5 days in advance of heat stress will not provide optimal results.

Superior Solar Protection Without the Hassle and Expense

Eckosil Shield standard use rate is 16 ounces per acre, leading to faster mixing, loading, and more acres treated in a day. It can be tank mixed with all in-season cover sprays, and 4 treatments cost about the same as single particle film application.
