Alexion Crosses The Street To Create New Jobs
Instead of leaving town, one of the city’s major biomedical employers plans to move into new space and create new jobs.

The employer is Alexion, a pharmaceutical company that was hatched in New Haven and hit the big time — so big that AstraZeneca bought it for $39 billion last year.

That purchase led to fears that Alexion — now the rare disease group of AstraZeneca — would move research and lab jobs out of its 100 College St. space (subsidized to the tune of $41 million by the state) to Boston, where executives were being reassigned.

On Thursday the company announced that it will double its current lab space in New Haven by occupying new space at the new Winstanley-built tower arising across the street at 101 College. The company stated in a release that it expects to move in there by “the end of 2023,” and that the space will be Platinum-level LEED certified. Read More
Quantum Week at Yale geared toward novices and experts alike
Yale’s hub for quantum research will soon entangle the campus — in the best possible sense — in a full week of mind-bending science, artistry, and discussion devoted to the wonders of quantum research.

Quantum Week at Yale, organized by the Yale Quantum Institute (YQI), will feature a hackathon, a lab tour, a movie screening, a record launch party, hands-on computer programming, a superconductive jewelry display, and an assortment of quantum-related library and museum exhibits.

The activities begin April 8 and run through April 14. A full list of events is available here.
Lamont Taps New Haven For $5.4M CT Communities Challenge Grant
New Haven is set to receive a $5,355,840 grant from Gov. Ned Lamont's newly established Connecticut Communities Challenge Grant Program. The Elm City is once of 12 cities and towns set to receive grants the "non-state and private" dollars-supported grants that "improve the livability and vibrancy of communities throughout the state." More than 50 percent of the program funding will be invested in Connecticut's distressed municipalities.

New Haven will receive the near-$5.4 million to support the State Street realignment from Audobon Street to George Street plan. The project would "unlock" the redevelopment potential of several parking lots for transit-oriented development/mixed-use development for a potential build out to 652,000 sq. ft. of developed space, including 447 new residential units and 80,000 sq. ft. of retail space. Students Offered Head Start On Manufacturing
Sixth-graders Tyler and Troy took turns peering at the instruction manual that illustrated how the walls and gears in front of them fit together — and imagining the claw robot (“clawbot”) that would soon be roving around by their own design.

The team shared their work with New Haven legislators and leaders in the entrance of the Hillhouse High School athletic center on Monday morning, as Board of Ed officials announced a new program geared toward technology-curious students like Tyler and Troy.

The announcement: Next year, 45 ninth graders and five to 10 adult education students will be able to pursue an associate’s degree in manufacturing engineering technology at Gateway Community College alongside their high school degrees.

U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, who represents New Haven in Congress, secured $2 million for the program as part of a federal “community project” (aka revived Congressional earmarks) funding package. That money will go toward building laboratories in Hillhouse and Wilbur Cross High Schools, which will serve students in the program from those high schools as well as Career High and adult education. The program is still accepting applications. Read More
