SPENCERVILLE - People come from far and wide to enjoy home-style food at The Village Pantry.
Whether it is the legendary cinnamon buns, breakfast sandwiches, fresh pizza, subs, or all of the above, this bakery has become a destination for many foodies and locals alike.
"I had a customer ask me if he could have my autograph," laughs owner Carol Kirkby, who uses beloved family recipes for most of her dishes, including her chili, soups, wraps, salads and many other specialties.
"People have told me we do such a good job that they don't know what they'd do without us," Carol says. A feature on CTV's Regional Contact two years ago started the flow of Ottawa-area and even Toronto fans who are now regulars.
Pizzas roll out of the oven all day long. Close to a thousand cinnamon buns are sold each week. Weekends are even busier. The Pantry is also a grocery, a deli and a great spot to have a banana split or an ice cream cone. Carol and her team also cater events.
This success story had a humble start 26 years ago, beginning with a vacant storefront. Carol's realtor suggested she put in a bakery. Within a year, she and her husband Barry were happy with their progress. The shop has gradually evolved to be a one-stop grocery. Today Carol could retire but she's still having fun.
"I enjoy every bit of it. I like to see people smile," says Carol. "You have to work hard and like people to run a business but I find it very rewarding."
