Furnace Falls Farm is
a retreat like no other
|
LYNDHURST - There is great place to escape to for food, fun and country-styled serenity in a transformed century-plus homestead.
Furnace Falls Farm Retreat is a new country getaway located in Leeds and the Thousand Islands on a site historically known as a family gathering place. It's no coincidence the retreat at 504 Old Briar Hill Road is a stone's throw from Wendy's Country Market. Wendy Banks, husband Rick, partners and family are the retreat's creators having spent a few years renovating the farm.
"This is an old farmhouse with new ideas," says Wendy, who wanted to fulfill her bucket list dream of combining local fresh foods, relaxing accommodations and an event venue for everything from cooking classes and supper clubs to weekend getaways, family reunions and barn weddings.
"I wanted to complete the farm-to-table circle," Wendy says. All food served on the farm is grown on site or is locally sourced. Wendy also wanted to create a place where people can reconnect and take a break from the hustle and bustle. "When people come into this house, there is a sense of family and of home," says Wendy.
Chefs Karen Marx and Mark Beacock make sure the large farmhouse kitchen is always busy and brimming with sweet and savoury food creations.
"This is a chef's dream job - having the freshest and best local food," says Karen. "I go out to the garden for my ingredients and many other products are sourced from neighbouring farms."
Attractions at Furnace Falls Farm are the Friday Night Supper Club, Saturday cooking classes, special Sunday brunches, along with workshops and unique events.
As a B&B, there are private rooms all with new ensuites, including an accessible main floor room. The entire house can be rented for weekend events like socials and wellness retreats.
"We're always trying to build the community around us," says Wendy, noting visitors who come from outside the area will also visit local shops, eateries and attractions.
"People all say the same thing about the farm: It's real and you feel like you are connecting to the most important things. That makes me smile," Wendy says.

SEELEY'S BAY -
A special event on Friday, September 28th recognized the improvements to the Seeley’s Bay Municipal Harbour and welcomed Le Boat to its community.
Starting in 2019, Le Boat guests will be able to enjoy one-way cruising on the Rideau Canal for the first time.
“This is an amazing day for us. This is a big fish for our little bay." Stated Peggy Sweet-McCumber, chair of the Seeley’s Bay Area Resident’s Association (SBARA) to more than 100 people in attendance. "Having tours departing from the bay will support our local businesses and revitalize our gorgeous village on the river.”
Just one year ago Le Boat announced the company’s expansion into North America, opening their main base in Smiths Falls. “With rave reviews and 82% occupancy, we are delighted to say Canada has been unprecedented success for Le Boat,” said Cheryl Brown Le Boat’s Global Managing Director.
The 2019 season will see four additional new boats on the Rideau Canal that include the state-of-the-art Horizon 5. Located in 8 European countries with 900 self-drive cruiser boats from a network of over 35 different departure bases Le Boat brings over 50 years of experience in the industry to Canada.
Seeley’s Bay event attendees were treated to a tour of Le Boat’s Horizon 4 and received copies of its world circulated
2019 Boating Vacations guide that features the Rideau Canal on its cover.
“I’m delighted to see Le Boat’s expansion in Leeds Grenville,” said Ann Weir Economic Development Manager for the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville. “The press and marketing coverage that Le Boat has generated is extensive and benefits the entire region.”
