Where Engaging Social Media Meets Customer Care

RIDEAU LAKES Replacing a major appliance or mattress is a purchase built on trust. Brothers Corey and Kyle, along with their father Brian McMullan, of McMullan Appliance & Mattress have leaned into that reality by combining dependable local service with an authentic online presence.

For over 35 years, McMullan Appliance & Mattress, the 2025 Rideau Lakes Business of the Year, has been a local source for essential home appliances like fridges, stoves, washers, dryers and mattresses. In an industry dominated by national retailers, this small business focuses on knowledgeable guidance and dependable products.

“We love our Leeds Grenville location; being between Brockville, Kingston, and Ottawa allows us to offer small-town local service to thousands of households,” says Corey. That approach creates the personal touches big-box retailers often struggle to provide. “Larger competitors can’t compete with the humanization of our local business,” he adds, a central philosophy that sets them apart.

In recent years, the business has embraced connecting with customers through social media, allowing them to showcase products, highlight real customer experiences, and communicate with transparency and personality. This consistent audience engagement has helped build brand voice and recognition, while also boosting sales, resulting in a doubling of their market share.

The business offers a steady and casual work environment. Consistent hours and a relaxed atmosphere contribute to employee retention and a team that reflects the company’s people-first philosophy. Keeping pace with their growth, they are looking to fill an administrative role.

Like many independent retailers, the McMullans have faced a few challenges. Supply chain disruptions, changing consumer expectations, and increased competition have required ongoing adjustments. Staying flexible, sourcing locally and continuously refining how the business operates keeps their brand resilient and responsive.

That adaptability has led to notable milestones. Most recently, McMullan Appliance & Mattress gained national attention with an appearance during Super Bowl LIX and a feature on CBC’s Still Standing, underscoring the business's relevance.

"Looking ahead, the goal is clear: to continue growing a strong, recognizable local brand that can be passed on to the next generation," Corey explains. By blending traditional customer service values with modern digital tools, they are well positioned to continue with confidence.
