Reducing Downtime Key to Customer Retention | |
SPRING VALLEY - The secret to the longevity of a business that has served the region for over 70 years lies in its commitment to excellence. “I grew up in this area,” says owner Laird Weagant with a bright smile.
Weagant Farm Supplies Ltd. provides new and used agriculture, turf, and construction equipment, parts, and expert servicing. The family business started by responding earnestly to customer needs, a philosophy that endures as staff work together to quickly fix breakdowns. They understand that getting machinery back in service reduces downtime costs for customers, fostering long-standing, trusting relationships and driving positive referrals.
“The team works diligently to create positive experiences,” adds Christy Griffin, HR Lead. Laird also praises the team, noting, “The sales and service desk staff are second to none, our mechanics are exceptional, and our after-sales program genuinely cares for customers.”
The business serves agricultural operations, hobby farms, turf care, snow removal, and construction companies. Its immaculate storefront is stocked with common tools, hardware, and an extensive inventory of parts for most brands. Last year, the shop area tripled in size to meet growing demand, allowing the simultaneous repair of up to sixteen machines.
The company has carried various equipment lines over the years. As one of Canada’s first Kubota dealers, when the Elizabethtown-Kitley store opened in 1982, Weagant Farm Supplies has grown, adding the store in Winchester. Lines like Great Plains hay equipment and Kawasaki side-by-sides contribute to a one-stop-shop experience. “We’ve worked hard so the customer has a choice,” says Laird.
Regarding community involvement, Laird stressed, “It’s important we mentor this relationship-building way of doing business so we continue to be here for the long run.” Last year, the family generously donated $100,000 towards the development of the G. Tackaberry Family Home in Athens.
Weagant also recognizes the importance of addressing skilled-trade job vacancies. To help fill the gap, Christy collaborates with Kemptville Campus’s Apprenticeship Training Centre, stating, “being able to complete training locally is important for work-life balance and professional development of apprentices.”
Climate change has driven a customized approach to groundskeeping. “Land Maintenance is the broader term for stewarding the healthiest environment,” says Laird. “Our region’s varied and fertile land requires intelligent maintenance.” This forward-thinking approach has helped the company adapt well to change. Their social media channels share valuable insights, and Laird advises business owners to “invest in solid client relations using new media and honest, transparent content. Reach out to your network to support new marketing strategies.” He understands that automation is the future, both on the farm and online.
With integrity guiding its path, Weagant’s future shines as brightly as a newly assembled tractor. The real secret is community—it’s the people that make the difference.
