Wash yourselves;
make yourselves clean;
remove the evil of your doings from before my eyes;
cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the
orphan, plead for the widow.
- Isaiah 1:16-17

G race to you and Peace from our Lord Jesus Christ.

Divided peoples struggle with one another from Korea to Charlottesville.  Barred borders repel families seeking refuge and reunification.

The brokenness of our world is, daily, becoming more evident. Unhealed wounds from centuries-long disparities set the parameters for present conflicts that spill out in ways we have not yet learned to avoid.

Two evils threaten an epidemic of dis-ease: barefaced hatred and vulgar indifference.

Many of those who stroll the halls of power, of prisons, or of marketplaces, carry a contagion of contempt for anyone not their own.

Others, equally diseased, discharge infectious indifference to anything but their own well-being.

Both suffer blindness to the treasure of our common humanity and the riches of our diverse cultures
-- the gifts of our loving Creator.

How are we, the church, to respond when an epidemic of hatred and indifference threatens to spread a malignancy of odium for the outsider in our midst?

We must garner our resolve to rise up together: to stand in the breach when our neighbors, our communities, our world is threatened with a debilitating plague of dis-ease.

In this issue of Ecumenical Notes, you will find several opportunities to stand together.
For a start, you are all invited to join me at the Mass Meeting for a Moral Revival tonight.

No one of us can do it all, and no one needs to act alone.

But each individual and each congreagation can choose one issue, one organization, one day of the week, when they will stand with others of good will, to " seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow."

The hour is now.  Let us not hesitate.

The central question of all Christian theology is Jesus' challenge,  "Who do  you say that I am?" The Christian community in every age has explored  the question and attempted to answer it in light of Scripture and human  experience. The course will study both past answers and  contemporary  positions.
