59 Labs Around World Handle the Deadliest Pathogens – Only 1 in 4 Score High on Safety
Known as biosafety level 4 (BSL4) labs, these are designed and built so that researchers can safely work with the most dangerous pathogens on the planet – ones that can cause serious disease and for which no treatment or vaccines exist. Researchers are required to wear full-body pressurised suits with independent oxygen.
Spread over 23 countries, the largest concentration of BSL4 labs is in Europe, with 25 labs. North America and Asia have roughly equal numbers, with 14 and 13 respectively. Australia has four and Africa three. Like the Wuhan Institute of Virology, three-quarters of the world’s BSL4 labs are in urban centers.
Around 60% of BSL4 labs are government-run public-health institutions, leaving 20% run by universities and 20% by biodefence agencies. These labs are either used to diagnose infections with highly lethal and transmissible pathogens, or they are used to research these pathogens to improve our scientific understanding of how they work and to develop new drugs, vaccines and diagnostics tests.

Breaking: Musk Twitter Takeover Officially Underway as New 'Complex' Plan Revealed After Cryptic Tweet
Elon Musk’s counteroffensive against Twitter may launch in less than two weeks’ time according to recent reports.
The self-made billionaire’s bid to buy the social media giant in an attempt to create a true free-speech platform was complicated when Twitter’s board, which has been known to take the opposite stance on many free-speech issues, adopted a “poison pill” policy, diluting his share of the company and, therefore, his leverage.
On Monday, a yet-to-be-confirmed report indicated that Musk was looking to circumvent this effort by teaming up with additional investors. Another report on Tuesday revealed that, according to the New York Post’s sources, Musk and his potential co-investors will be planning to launch a tender offer for Twitter in 10 days or so.
This investor team-up will be “a complex deal that raises debt against both the company and possibly [Musk’s] own stock, as well as a giant cash equity infusion from co-investors,” the Post reported.

Infowars files for bankruptcy
The far-right website Infowars has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, as founder Alex Jones faces a handful of lawsuits including several related to his comments after 2012 mass shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.
Representatives for the site filed this past weekend in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas.
Chapter 11 allows companies to continue operations as plans for financial reorganization take shape.
It also places a hold on all civil litigation suits. Jones’ other companies – Infowars Health and Prison Planet TV – also filed in the Texas court, according to CBS News.
In the filing, Infowars claims it has assets valued at $0-$50,000, and liabilities ranging from $1 million to $10 million. more

Biden has told Obama he’s running again
President Biden has told former President Obama that he is planning to run for reelection in 2024, two sources tell The Hill.
The admission to Obama is the latest indication that Biden is likely to run for a second term, something the president has spoken about publicly.
During a press conference in Brussels last month, he told reporters he’d be “very fortunate” to run against his rival in the 2020 election, former President Trump.
“[Biden] wants to run and he’s clearly letting everyone know,” said one of the two sources familiar with the conversations between Obama and Biden.

Psilocybin, the active ingredient in ‘magic mushrooms,’ makes scientific gains
Research on the use of psychedelic drugs as potential treatment for psychiatric disorders has gained momentum in the U.S. in recent years, with compounds like psilocybin — the active ingredient in “magic mushrooms” — shifting from the fringes of medicine toward the mainstream.
Limited studies out of institutions like Johns Hopkins University and others over the last decade have shown promise in using psilocybin in tandem with talk therapy to help longtime smokers quit smoking, ease anxiety in people +with terminal cancer and reduce symptoms of major depression.
Earlier this year, a follow-up study by Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers found two doses of the hallucinogenic compound....

AFTER 700 DAYS, MASKS OFF
After 700 consecutive days of being required to board Metro trains and buses with faces masked, some riders approached the mandate’s disappearance Tuesday with unease — while others breathed uncovered sighs of relief.
“I’m a germaphobe,” Desha Quarles, 34, said through a black hospital mask as she waited for a Green Line train at the Georgia Avenue-Petworth station. “I’m not too comfortable with it. I’m going to keep my mask on as much as I can. I don’t like this.”

Revisiting Military Cultural Intelligence: Lessons from Afghanistan and Iraq
This paper revisits military cultural intelligence, a capability used by the British and Americans in their COIN operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, to secure the support or neutrality of the population. Military cultural intelligence involved gathering cultural information to communicate and engage more effectively with the local people, with the aim of securing their support or neutrality. Drawing on the first-hand accounts of a small group of former high-ranking military personnel (six from the UK and one from the US) this paper examines three problems with the application of military cultural intelligence in the two conflicts.
However, instead of using these problems to argue for its abandonment, it discusses how these might be remedied. Crucially, it argues that cultural intelligence should not be cast aside or forgotten, and its importance has not diminished. As we enter a new era of heightened geopolitical tension, NATO and its allies are likely to face a range of threats, not only that of conventional war, but also irregular war and insurgency. It is therefore paramount to discuss this significant capability, to be prepared for future challenges.

The Plan To Destroy America Was Built Around Electing a Brain-dead Sock Puppet... And Now Everyone Knows It
Wayne Allyn Root
They used nonthreatening, white-haired Biden to convince naive, welfare-addicted, low-information voters to vote for a harmless grandfather without realizing they were really voting for the destruction of America and the end of capitalism.
Then to make sure they won, Democrats rigged the election in six key battleground states with fake mail-in ballots, together with no voter ID required and no signature match. They threw in fraudulent ballot harvesting; unguarded ballot "drop boxes;" and they made sure to remove Republican witnesses from ballot counting rooms.
The American people are waking up. Everyone sees Biden for the dementia puppet he is. Even CNN admitted this week that Biden's poll numbers are the lowest of any president in history.
Biden the puppet, propped up as the fraudulent front man, opened the door for the destruction of America.

On Nature and Grace: The Role of Reason in the Life of Faith
The hero of my reflections is Aquinas. As a young student, Thomas was unresponsive and seemed dull. But Albert the Great said something about him that turned out to be prophetic: “We call this young man a dumb ox, but his bellowing in doctrine will one day resound throughout the world.” Aquinas is regularly in need of being rediscovered. I say this because he is a logically rigorous author, whom some readers find dry and uninspiring.
Admittedly, his writing lacks the emotional power of Augustine’s Confessions, the rhetorical energy of Anselm’s Proslogion, and the inspired poetic flights of Dante.
Aquinas does not tell stories. He argues and makes distinctions. He is what most people associate with the term “scholastic.” And yet there are in the Summa, as I hope to show, great beauties that cannot be found in other works of theology. Aquinas is the greatest Christian theologian of nature and the natural. Nature for him is not the sensuous, immediately given nature that St. Francis loved, nature as the world of trees and birds, of the sun and moon.

Religious Liberty and the Reality of the Christian Tradition
When thinking about religious liberty in the United States, we typically ask how religious faith may best be protected and fostered within the American legal system, whether as that institution was originally conceived or as it has lately become. But it is possible to reverse the perspective and the standard by which religious liberty is measured. Instead of assessing the status of religion from within the horizon set by law, we might instead assess the law on this question from within the horizon of religion, interpreted first according to its own measure.
This is what I propose to do in this brief reflection, taking the classical Christian tradition rather than the contemporary American situation as the given starting point. The very fact that both the question and the nature of religious freedom proves to be so radically different (as we will see) whether it is viewed from the one starting point or the other is itself something already worthy of serious reflection, even if we cannot pursue this particular reflection here.

The (Updated) Case for Free Trade
The long‐standing bipartisan consensus in favor of free trade in the United States has unraveled as the nation’s commitment to the multilateral trading system is increasingly subordinated to inward‐looking ideological priorities. Like all forms of market competition, trade can be disruptive for some companies and workers, and various trade agreements may require updating to address both an increasingly authoritarian China and the 21st‐century global economy.
Nevertheless, both the seen and unseen economic benefits that free trade has delivered to countless individuals, businesses, and communities in America are undeniable and irreplaceable. Furthermore, the lone alternative to free trade, protectionism, has repeatedly proven to impose high costs for minimal benefits. In short, the case for free trade is an economic no‐brainer.

How the West Was Won: Counterinsurgency, PSYOPS and the Military Origins of the Internet, Part I: Look a Gift Horse in the Mouth
As the digital revolution was underway in the mid-nineties, research departments at the CIA and NSA were developing programs to predict the usefulness of the world wide web as a tool for capturing what they dubbed “birds of a feather” formations. That's when flocks of sparrows make sudden movements together in rhythmical patterns.
They were particularly interested in how these principles would influence the way that people would eventually move together on the burgeoning internet: Would groups and communities move together in the same way as ‘birds of a feather, so that they could be tracked in an organised way? And if their movements could be indexed and recorded, could they be identified later by their digital fingerprints?
How the West Was Won: Counterinsurgency, PSYOPS and the Military Origins of the Internet, Part 2: The Military Origins of the Internet
As Sasha Levine reveals in his ground-breaking book, Surveillance Valley, at the height of the Cold War, US military commanders were pursuing a decentralised computer communications system without a base of operations or headquarters, that could withstand a Soviet strike, without blacking-out or destroying the entire network.
The project was coordinated by the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), created by President Eisenhower in 1958, for the development of technologies that would expand the frontiers of science and technology and help the US close the missile gap with the Soviets.

Are Equal Pay Arguments Based upon the
Labor Theory of Value?
It has been demonstrated that a man who simply wins an individual qualification game in the World Cup has higher potential earnings than any woman received for winning the entire World Cup. This argument has raged on for decades, but this outcome of Women’s World Cup champions being paid less than men who merely qualify has heated the debate significantly more within the past few years.
This led to tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas making the claim that because men and women win the same prize money in Grand Slams but play a different number of sets, women, who currently play three-game sets, should play five-game sets as the men do. He went on to explain that the five-game sets that men play simply take a different psychology and a different level of endurance in comparison to the three-game sets that women play.
Prima facie, to the layperson in economics this is a perfectly logical retort to the outcomes-based arguments of the other side. However, this in no way accounts for any disparity in pay. While the counterfactual cannot be proven, it is very likely that if Tsitsipas had only been playing best-of-three sets instead of best-of-fifive, he would have still been compensated more than his female counterparts.
The reason for this is that this assumption rests on the labor theory of value, which is simply false and needs to be unilaterally rejected. The logic behind this is that the male athletes engage in two additional games per set of labor and therefore are deserving of more pay. In reality, the consumers impute value to the product through their subjective valuations. As Ludwig von Mises said:

Education as if Truth Mattered
The title of this essay, “Education as if Truth Mattered,” is taken from the subtitle of Christopher Derrick’s book, Escape from Scepticism: Liberal Education as if Truth Mattered, published in 1977. Derrick’s subtitle was itself borrowed and adapted from the subtitle of E. F. Schumacher’s international bestseller, Small is Beautiful: Economics as if People Mattered, published four years earlier. Derrick and Schumacher were friends, the former being instrumental in introducing the latter to the Church’s social teaching, and the two books have much more in common than their ostensibly different subjects would suggest.
In both cases, the authors illustrate how modernity’s philosophical materialism has undermined the very foundations of civilized life and how the solution to the problem is a return to traditional concepts of the good, the true, and the beautiful. Schumacher turned to the wisdom of the ancients to help him understand the defects of the economy; Derrick turned to the wisdom of the ancients to correct the defects of the academy. Whether considering the plight of the economy or the academy, both men showed how the denigration of the good, the fragmentation of the true, and the destruction of the beautiful have resulted in a world that is bankrupt in terms of true wealth.

As Fighting Gets Worse, Public Schooling Battle Map Gets an Upgrade
2021 was a record year for values‐ and identity‐based conflicts in public schools. We have 381 conflicts cataloged for that year on our Public Schooling Battle Map, dwarfing the next closest year: 2018, with 250 battles. And 2022 looks like it could give 2021 a run for its money, with 120 throwdowns so far.
Given the intensified heat surrounding public schooling, we at Cato’s Center for Educational Freedom, via the invaluable skills of Cato’s web team, have worked to make the Public Schooling Battle Map faster and, hopefully, more useful. To do that, we have implemented the following:
In addition to these improvements, note that we update existing battles whenever something new of importance happens, such as legislation being passed, or lawsuits decided. So keep checking the summaries of conflicts in your district, state, or just of interest to you.
Also, we will be updating the “Featured Content” at the bottom of the page more frequently, to act as something of a hub for CEF’s work reforming K‑12 education to foster harmony and equality.

Nation Can’t Help But Take Small Bit Of Pride In Success Of K
inahan Cartel
The announcement by US drug enforcement agencies that a local drug gang ranks ‘up there with the Yakuza or the Russian mafia’ in terms of size and power has prompted a tiny bit of COYBIG energy in Irish hearts today.
At a briefing attended by the DEA, the US department of Homeland Security, Europol, the UK National Crime Agency, Thunderbirds, the Famous Five, the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers and the Garda Síochána, the breadth of the billion-dollar Kinahan drug empire was laid bare for all to see, prompting mixed reactions back home.
“I know the road to success in the drug game is paved with mayhem, pain and death. But still, you have to kinda hand it to them,” said one man we spoke to on the streets of Waterford.
