The Australian National Curriculum (Standards)

As announced by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), in 2014 the Foundation to Year 10 Australian Curriculum was implemented for the four core subject areas. The national curriculum (educational standards) was implemented to improve the learning outcomes for Australian students regardless of their socio-educational advantages or disadvantage.  The goals of the national standards are to rebalance the learning outcomes and improve accessibility for students with disabilities. Australia has worked towards this goal for two decades and now the first Australian national standards are available for use in schools across Australia.  Using a blend of the best state and territory standards along with examples of standards from other countries across the world the standards have taken two to three years of development for each subject.  In an effort to support 21st century learning, cross-curriculum priorities were included in addition to the learning areas and general capabilities.  National standards in other subject areas such as the arts, civics, and business and economics are also in the process of being implemented.  EdGate has these and other international standards available for licensing or for content correlation. If your company would is interested in having access to these or other international standards please contact your project manager or a member of our sales team.

Next Generation Science Standards

The Next Generation Science Standards have been closely scrutinized virtually since their inception by scientists and others. The most public controversy has been, unsurprisingly, about the treatment of evolution in the NGSS. However, specialists in other areas are contributing their views as well. According to this article, a recent analysis of the coverage of genetics concepts in the NGSS and state science standards was done by education specialists at the American Society of Human Genetics. They determined that, on average, the NGSS were a slight improvement over individual state standards, but that several key concepts were not addressed - notably, understanding patterns of genetic inheritance. It was also noted that the reviewers involved in the study frequently disagreed about whether particular NGSS items addressed genetic concepts and how deeply they did so. The study's authors argue that similar variations in interpretation of the NGSS among educators and stakeholders may lead to inconsistencies in the level and quality of science education under the NGSS.

For more information, see the press release issued by the American Society of Human Genetics and the original study published in PLOS ONE.

SmartBlog on Education

Our attention was captured by a recent three part blog written by Lucien Vattel, CEO of nonprofit GameDesk and founder and co-director of the PlayMaker School. The second blog in the series highlights play as the foundation for learning. "Through educational play, we get to explore new ideas and come to know ourselves, as well as those around us in often-profound ways" says Lucien Vattel. When researching early childhood standards for ages 3-5, EdGate found over 1,200 standards across the country that focus on imaginative play.Take a minute to explore the PlayMaker School site
PlayMaker School. You will be inspired!  PlayMaker School was also recently highlighted on PBS NewsHour.
