The sun shone brightly on the morning of Sept. 3, bringing with it a sense of excitement to the educational community in Elmsford. It was the start of a brand new school year!

Students at Alice E. Grady Elementary School were greeted by their new Principal, Dr. Andrea Hamilton when school began on Sept. 3.
|
|
Students were not the only ones who looked forward to a new school year. Several new staff members were just as eager to get into the schools and classrooms and start a new chapter in their careers.
|
|
In observance of National Bullying Prevent Month in September, the Elmsford Union Free School District, Our Lady of Mount Carmel School and the Village of Elmsford once again joined forces to stomp out bullying in the community.
|

|
County executives, religious leaders, the public and friends and family of the deceased gathered at the Kensico Dam in Valhalla near the 9/11 memorial statue called “The Rising.” Joining them were a select group of students from Alexander Hamilton High School.
|
|
|
|
The United Way, with the help of Wegmans Supermarket, installed a Born to Learn Trail on the Dixson campus. Ten learning stations were put in around the school grounds that encourage students to pay attention to their surroundings to see what they can learn, while others promote being active.
|

The fathers and special adults of students at Grady and Carl L. Dixson Primary School were cordially invited to participate in the ‘Dads Take Your Child to School Day’ on Sept. 17. Many of them graciously accepted the invitation.

The suspense emanating from the gymnasium at Alexander Hamilton High School was palpable. Would the structure hold?
There was only one way to find out. Add another book. The result? A collapsed bridge and groans from those watching. The exercise was one of three challenges teams of eighth- and tenth graders had during the Engineering Challenge on Oct. 18.

Fútbal, or soccer as it is known here, is the favorite sport. Most children walk to school rather than take a bus, and wearing uniforms to school is not too bad. This was some of the information gleaned from third-and-fourth grade students at the Alice E. Grady Elementary School when they spoke with students at a school in Mexico City, Mexico.

Food, food and more food was the highlight of the Cultural Heritage Day held at Alexander Hamilton Middle/High School on Oct. 11. Seventh-and-eighth-graders enjoyed an enormous buffet of culinary delights they had brought in to share. The menu included, but was not limited to, churros, rice pudding, flan, corn bread, rice lasagna, empanadas, curry chicken, BBQ chicken and much more.

Gathering in the Alexander Hamilton High School auditorium, students, teachers and parents were treated to an array of music, poetry and more for the first Hispanic Heritage Assembly. The event was part of several ways the district came together to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, which ran from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.

The entire school community came out to recognize Hunger Awareness Day on September 12. Students and staff dressed in orange and some students engaged in activities to further learn about and support the cause.

On Election Day, Nov. 5, Isaiah was voted in as president of the Grady Executive Board. He is joined by Angel Hidalgo as vice president, Eviana Palines as treasurer and Lilly Loriega as secretary.

More than 60 college and university representatives filled the gym at Alexander Hamilton High School on Oct. 24. They spent the day answering student questions from students who are beginning the college application process.

Nothing gets the attention of young children more than a big ol’ red fire truck. When one such piece of apparatus parked itself in the parking lot at the Carl L. Dixson Primary School, students took notice. A highlight of the Fire Prevention assembly, held on Oct. 8, was when students had an opportunity to crawl through the firetruck and get a closer look. There were lots of giggles and smiles of delight.

In the morning on Halloween, students at the Carl L. Dixson Primary School enjoyed the school’s annual Pumpkin Patch. Each student was given a small pumpkin and had the fun of decorating it. There were stickers and markers available to adorn their gourd with whatever creative designs they could imagine. In the afternoon, because the weather had turned poor, students at the Alice E. Grady Elementary School had their annual Halloween parade indoors.

Throughout the day, students engaged in apple-themed activities which incorporated everything from counting, completing number sentences, making a pattern, counting in tens and number recognition.
|

Normally the buzz coming from the auditorium at Alexander. Hamilton High School is from the talent on display on stage. On Oct. 18, however, the buzz emanated from power tools.
A group of students were busy using leftover wood from previous productions to make five bookcases.
