Ornithologist and Author Alan Poole:
Three Weeks on a Euro-Osprey Tour
Thursday, May 13
7pm
|
|
The extraordinary revival in osprey numbers that we are witnessing in southern New England has not been restricted to our shores. Nearly eliminated from most of Europe half a century ago, ospreys are staging a remarkable comeback, from Scotland to Spain and from France to Finland. Follow South Coast osprey expert Alan Poole as he brings us along on a three-week summer trip through Europe, visiting osprey researchers and gathering material for his recently published book, Ospreys: the revival of a global raptor. Part travelogue, part natural history, this beautifully illustrated lecture will provide glimpses of Europe through an osprey lens. Come celebrate the revival of a global raptor, from Martha's Vineyard to Europe!
Alan Poole, an Associate of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, was editor of the Birds of North America life history series for 22 years. He lives along the Westport River estuaries in southeastern Massachusetts, has been studying ospreys for over 35 years, and has written two books on the species.
This program has been generously funded by the Friends of the Edgartown Free Public Library.

Author Talk with Laurie David:
Imagine It! A Handbook for a Happier Planet
Tuesday, May 18
7pm
|
|
Join us for a talk with Laurie David, co-author of Imagine It! A Handbook for a Happier Planet. Ms. David co-wrote the book with Heather Reisman, both of whom are long-time environmental activists who have brought their message to audiences through award-winning documentaries, including Fed Up, The Biggest Little Farm, and the Oscar–winning An Inconvenient Truth.
With their latest project, they outline in clear steps how environmentally conscious “lifestyle shifts” can lower our use of plastic, paper, water, and harmful chemicals. A cleaner, healthier world can be ours—if we imagine it. Ms. David will take questions after the talk.

Movie in Focus: Film Discussion Group
Bicycle Thieves (Italy, 1948)
Monday, May 24
11am
|
|
Until the day comes when we can enjoy films together again on the library’s big screen, we’re hosting a monthly virtual film group. View our movie of the month (free on Kanopy or Hoopla) and we’ll meet to discuss it via Zoom. Bring your impressions and opinions. Virginia Munro will choose the films and facilitate the group.
Bicycle Thieves shows us one frantic day in the life of a working man, desperate to find the stolen bicycle his job depends upon. Set in the bomb-battered streets of post-WWII Rome, director Vittorio de Sica’s film has long been considered a masterpiece of Italian neorealism. But it is also a universal story that still speaks to us, one teeming with life, energy, and emotion. This film is streaming for free on Kanopy.

A Piet Oudolf Story with
Landscape Design Consultant
Deborah Chud
Thursday, May 27
7pm
|
|
When Dr. Deborah Chud wanted to landscape her new home, she imagined just what she wanted it to look like. But after many months and too much money, the result was nothing near what she had envisioned. Then she discovered the work of Piet Oudolf, the brilliant Dutch landscape designer who placed equal importance on both structure and color.
Gardeners and designers have always looked longingly at Oudolf’s gardens when leafing through his many beautifully-illustrated books, but Deborah Chud wanted something more. In what turned into a five-year journey, she studied Oudolf’s designs and developed an unprecedented understanding of why Oudolf’s gardens are so magical. She also created the world’s most comprehensive database of his plant combinations. In this presentation, we’ll learn Chud’s personal story: how she started as a non-gardener and created her current garden (see above), along with a monster database and a new career. She’ll also describe the historical context of Oudolf’s work. Finally, she’ll introduce his basic design principles of structure, coherence, and contrast.
This program has been generously funded by the Friends of the Edgartown Free Public Library.
