Chef Chris Look is back with his live-on-Zoom cooking series, creating delicious dishes from his own kitchen. A professional chef for almost twenty years, Chris is one of the most imaginative cooks we know, and his affable personality makes him a natural teacher. For October, he will prepare a pumpkin and apple macaroni and cheese topped with a bleu cheese crumble, which in Chris’s own words is “a stunner” of a recipe.

A program to please sports lovers, history buffs, and trivia fans, host Martin Gitlin bases this presentation on his highly-praised book Powerful Moments in Sports: The Most Significant Sporting Events in American History. Featuring exciting videos of sporting events throughout more than 100 years that have impacted society and/or the sports themselves, the presentation also features fun trivia questions for patrons to ponder. A Q&A session will follow.

In poet Donald Nitchie’s writing workshop, participants will have an opportunity to build a poem prompted and inspired by poetry that Donald will choose for the exercise. Poets will also have a chance to submit a poem or two of their own for the group to read and discuss during the second half of the workshop. Positive peer assessment can help you through a writing problem and provide a new perspective on your work.

[Online] Dementia Friends: An Informational Presentation with Mary Holmes

Did you know that there are over 130,000 people living with dementia in Massachusetts? Many of them live lonely and isolated lives because of their condition. Dementia Friends is a social action movement developed by the Alzheimer’s Society in the United Kingdom, and Massachusetts is one of the first U.S. states to launch the Dementia Friends program. It aims to give people an understanding of dementia and the small things we can all do for people in our communities living with this condition. Trained Dementia Friends Champion Mary Holmes, Supervisor of the Supportive Day Program in Vineyard Haven, will deliver this one-hour informational session.

This month’s film, The Witch (UK, 2016), is part folktale, part fairytale, and completely frightening. A horror film that generates dread and foreboding rather than screams, The Witch is rich in detail and atmosphere. Set in 1630’s New England, the talents of director and screenwriter Robert Eggers and his cast keep the menace festering up to the terrifying climax. The film is available to screen for free on Kanopy with your library card.

Learn about the beginnings of horror cinema, the stories behind your favorite characters, and behind-the-scenes trivia about the making of these classic movies. Film historian Frank Mandosa will bring you all of this, plus clips and trailers, for a newfound appreciation of a genre that has withstood the test of time.

Roll up the rug! Celtic duo Stanley & Grimm (fiddler Nikki Engstrom and singer-guitarist Sean Brennen) are back, performing an hour of live music via Zoom to celebrate Samhain. Pronounced sah-win, Samhain is the Gaelic festival taking place at the midpoint between the fall equinox and the winter solstice, marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. They'll play reels, jigs, tunes of lost love, songs of the old country, and more.
