This Fall, Let the Library Be
Your 'Third Place'
|
One Saturday this month, as Alan Gowell and his crew installed signage on our new library, this building was briefly the Edgartown Pub.
The lettering was completed before anyone could order a pint of stout, but it got us to thinking about "third places," an idea introduced by the American sociologist, Ray Oldenburg.
The first place in almost everyone's life is home. The second place, where we spend so much of our lives, is work. Oldenburg's contribution was to highlight the importance of what he calls the third places in our lives -- free, public places where everyone is welcome, where they know your name, where friends gather and community is fostered.
Although the only beverage we serve here is morning coffee, we think the Edgartown Library meets most of the definitions of a third place. And now, with summer over and the community settling back into the more peaceful rhythms of the off-season, we hope you'll make time to visit your library and rediscover the pleasures of a great third place.

Filmmaker Presents
His Documentary
At 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7
Alice's Ordinary People is filmmaker Craig Dudnick's documentary about Alice Tregay, an unsung heroine of the Civil Rights Movement. Her remarkable story spans the historic period from the marches of Martin Luther King to the election of Barack Obama. Tregay's great contribution in the field of politics is the thread which connects the two.
Mr. Dudnick will be on hand to introduce the film at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7, and to answer questions following the screening.

Opera Club Presents Oct. 22
Screening
Of Il Barbieri di Siviglia, Rossini's Classic
At 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, the Opera Club will present a sparkling 2005 production of Rossini's comic opera led by two of bel canto's stars-- Maria Bayo as Rosina and Juan Diego Florez as her handsome suitor, Count Almaviva. The wily barber of the title is sung by Pietro Spagnoli.
A co-production of the Teatro Real de Madrid and the Teatro Sao Carlos de Lisboa, this
opera runs three hours including intermission. It's s
ung in Italian with English subtitles.
All adults welcome.

Gotta Dance: Library Film Series
Concludes in October
On Wednesday nights since Sept. 21, the library has been presenting a series of films on our program room's big screen, all of them celebrating the cinematic art of dance. All the screenings start at 7 p.m., and these free programs are for adults. Here's the lineup:
Wednesday, Oct. 5:
Tango
Director Carlos Saura captures the essence of a dazzling dance tradition in a film that wafts dreamily through countless forms of tango magic. (Argentina, 1998)
Wednesday, Oct. 12:
Saturday Night Fever
There's some grit and intensity to the film, but most memorable are Travolta's moves and the Bee Gees soundtrack. Directed by John Badham (United States, 1977).
Wednesday, Oct. 19:
Pina
This film is an exhilarating experience, both in its celebration of Pina Bausch's groundbreaking work and in the thrilling way that director Wim Wenders captures it on camera. (Germany, 2011)
Wednesday, Oct. 26:
Strictly Ballroom
 As the first screen effort from director Baz Luhrmann, the film has laughs, great dancing, and a sense of madness and mania running just below its surface. (Australia, 1992)

Library Presents Screen Adventure
At 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29
At a special movie matinee on Saturday, Oct. 29, the library will present a free 2 pm. screening of
The Hunt for the Wilderpeople, a
huge audience favorite at festivals this year for its brand of dark New Zealand humor, coupled with an adventure story that goes off-road, off-grid, and off the rails.
Directed by Taika Waititi (2016). This film is rated PG-13.

Library Book Club Meets
Wednesday, Oct. 19,

The Edgartown Library book group, facilitated by author Jean Stone, will gather at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19, to discuss
Jodi Picoult's novel,
Leaving Time
.
Looking ahead, the group's next meeting will be on Wednesday, Nov. 16, when
Skipping Christmas by John Grisham will be up for discussion.
We have copies of these books if you'd like to pick one up here at the library. The group is open and welcome to all.

We invite everyone from teens to seniors to join teachers from The Yard, Chilmark's celebrated arts center, for community dance classes at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays through this month of October. This class is for people at all levels of experience, but space is limited; loose-fitting clothes are advisable. Call the library to sign up -- then come in and move!

Halloween Events: Make Creepy Treats
At the Library on Saturday, Oct. 22

On Friday, Oct. 28
Elyce Bonnell of our library staff will lead a Halloween treat-decorating class from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22. This fun event is a time for parents and kids to come together making yummy treats for the holiday ahead.
On Friday, Oct. 28, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., the library will hold its annual Halloween party. We'll have
treats, ghost stories, arts & crafts, and more. We hope you'll join us, and we wish everyone a fun and safe holiday.

Save the Date: Poetry Reading
Set for Wednesday, Nov. 2
The library will host a reading of new work by the members of the MV Poets' Collective at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 2. Come join us for a fun and inspiring evening of poetry, followed by a reception.
All adults are welcome.
