Tarboro In Bloom has a new partnership
On Friday, during a routine landscape cleanup day at Courthouse Square, members of Tarboro In Bloom welcomed many helping hands, a partnership with Martin Millennium Academy's Junior Garden Club. According to their leader, MMA's AIG Specialist Brandy Chappell, the group of fifth through eighth graders is working on a Junior Master Gardener Program provided through the Cooperative Extension Service and Edgecombe's Master Gardener Volunteers. Now in their second year, the club meets for an hour every first and third Friday for Club Day.
The club is focused on eight areas of study in completing their Junior Master Gardener status:
- Plant Growth and development
- Soils and water
- Ecology and environmental horticulture
- Insects and diseases
- Landscape orticulture
- Fruits and Nuts
- Vegetables and herbs
- Life skills and career exploration
The students will complete an individual and a group project on each part. This is a service-learning program and, according to Chappell, they worked with the Edgecombe Master Gardeners last year with guidance from Candis Owens, a member who also serves on the Tarboro In Bloom board.
"Our goal is to learn to grow our own food and we hope to start a community garden," said Chappell. "The students have gotten hands-on experience from field trips to my own garden (a short walk from campus) where we planted a number of bulbs provided by Nash-Edgecombe Keep America Beautiful," she added.
Candis Owens commented that the students seemed to enjoy working in a larger scale landscape at Courthouse Square where they met many of the TIB board members who were instructing them on which plants are weeds. "A major theme throughout TIB's mission is community involvement which includes working with youth," said Owens. "This is going to be a valuable partnership for us."
Brad Guth, Tarboro's new Main Street Coordination stopped by to meet the young volunteers and to hear about Tarboro In Bloom's plans for prepping the site for the festivities during the Tar River Christmas, a three-day package of events that includes Tarboro's Christmas Parade on Sunday, December 11.

Parade Application
Dear Friend,
The Pinetops Christmas Parade Committee is very pleased and proud to invite you to be a part of the 42nd Annual Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 3rd at 10:00 am. Last year we had over 55 participants and hundreds of spectators from all across eastern North Carolina. We hope to continue growing, both in participants and spectators.
We want this to be a fun and exciting parade for "kids of all ages" and a celebration of the holiday season. While we hope to see professional floats, marching bands, old cars, and scout groups, we'd also like to see our local school groups, church groups, homemade floats, and clowns. All in all, our hope is that this will be a celebration of the holiday season.
The Christmas Parade relies greatly on the generosity of the citizens and businesses of Pinetops and the South Edgecombe/Maccripine community. If you wish to make a donation toward the parade, send your donation to the Pinetops Christmas Parade Committee; Drawer C, Pinetops, NC 27864. Checks should be made payable to: Pinetops Christmas Parade.
For more information about the Pinetops Christmas Parade and printable entry forms, you may visit the town of Pinetops website: www.pinetopsnc.com and be sure to "Like" us on Facebook.
Professional floats are available again this year. The cost of sponsoring a float is $450.00. You may wish to co-sponsor a float with another business or organization at a cost of $225.00 each.
We also encourage organizations to be creative and design their own floats. These non-professional floats will be judged and prizes will be awarded to the top three entries!
You may register either by mailing the enclosed entry form, or dropping your entry form off at the Town Hall. Registration deadline is Wednesday, November 23, 2016.
Please join with us in making the 2016 Pinetops Christmas Parade an event to be remembered!
Sincerely,
Pinetops Christmas Parade Committee
