The Eagles' Call!
Edgewater High School Community Brief
Monday, June 22, 2020

Over the past three months we have asked parents to become de facto teachers, helping to support the formal processing of educating students and asking parents to develop their skill set outside their comfort zone. As someone with formal teacher training, but years since my last classroom experience, I, too, found monitoring, instructing, and supporting my child's teacher quite challenging.

One major focus of writing instruction is to establish/form a claim based on information provided and include the most salient points from that information to support your claim. That's what teachers do. We see it across the curriculum and intentionally plan for and monitor this process. Yes, even in math.

What has happened across our country over the past three months didn't start in the past three months. Whether we are discussing public health, health care access, social injustice, or equal rights under the law, we have an obligation to ensure our young people can leverage their life experience, their relationships, and their opportunities to lean in, listen, develop informed opinions and have discussions that matter. This requires teaching, guidance, and meaningful conversation with our kids.

I am grateful that my parents sacrificed as much as they did to send me to a school that provided me lots of individualized attention. My teachers, classmates and I frequently discussed social issues, economic inequality, and even traveled to a third world country to help support education there. My greatest educational experiences didn't come from a text book or prom completing problems, 1-21 (odd numbered problems only). It came from the collaboration with classmates and teachers among issues that really mattered. However, 99% of the students looked like me, talked like me and had the same life experience as me. And, while my parents led my siblings and I by example, I left high school woefully unprepared to engage others in enlightened conversation about their life experience.

Our school is unique. We have the full spectrum of life experience in our classrooms. It also means we come to school with different values, beliefs and opinions. We have a tremendous opportunity to lean in, listen, educate, and grow. If we do nothing else but these four things as a school next year, I see us developing independent, informed, thoughtful student leaders prepared to drive discourse around complex societal issues.

College and Career Centerccc

Once the school year gets underway, our College and Career Specialist, Ms. Neiswanger, will share ongoing opportunities to help Edgewater's college bound students with financial aid. The nearby chart shows how in the USA the amount of funds borrowed for college varies by income. One of the risks of borrowing too much to pay for college as it can hamper post college goals such as buying a house or starting a family.
