The Eagles' Call!
Edgewater High School Community Brief
Monday, April 13, 2020

I hope this message finds you all healthy and safe. With all of the distractions of distance learning, we did not properly acknowledge Assistant Principals Week this week, so please allow me to brag about our amazing assistant principals.

Many assume that assistant principals are either "Principal Apprentices" or "Principals-in-Training." This is simply not true. Even if they one day become principals, I still feel comfortable leaving any of them in charge if I am off campus. All three are uniquely qualified to run our school in my absence. OCPS does an amazing job of setting high standards for identifying instructional leaders for assistant principal positions. This is so they can hit the ground running once placed in a school as a principal. Our assistant principals have to juggle overseeing departments, supporting teachers and students, scheduling, and the list goes on. Our assistant principals are also mothers, spouses, and caretakers. Yet, they manage to do it all. Our assistant principals maintain an on-call presence of 24/7. I can get a hold of them whenever I need to and they are quick to act.

They lead with confidence and conviction. I am grateful for each of them and marvel at their work ethic. If you have a moment, I ask that you please thank Jodi Blevins, Teleshia Jones, and Betsy Leis for their amazing leadership on behalf of our teachers and students. They deserve our admiration.

Educational Attainment and Employment During Economic Shocks
On Friday, April 3 the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released their March 2020 jobless report. The March figures reflect the early effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19) and efforts to contain it - read full report.

The chart below reflects a pattern that has held true for decades. When the U.S. economy goes into a downturn or confronts an external "shock" such as with the COVID-19 outbreak, those individuals with more education have the better odds of staying employed.

* Gray area represents the most recent recessionary period on record (Dec. 2007 to June 2009) and the figures show the net gain or loss in the number of jobs (in millions) since Dec. 2007 by level of education.
