The Eagles' Call!
Edgewater High School Community Brief
Monday, April 20, 2020

So, through distance learning I've tried more than ever, to put myself in the shoes of students, teachers and parents.

And I had my a-ha moment on Thursday afternoon. I was headed out to exercise in the afternoon when I received a text from my ex-wife about our 8 year old daughter and the fact that she lost any possibility of an evening treat and TV for the duration of the day due to her treatment of her "teacher at home." I asked whether Principal Dad could talk to her. So, I called. My daughter and I spoke. She said mom wasn't explaining things well and she's just getting upset. Mom said Parker wasn't exhibiting the type of effort she would normally exhibit for her superstar of a teacher, Mrs. McNamara. We settled things and instruction continued:)

But, it was such an eye opening experience for me as a principal. All over the country, parents are doing their level best to assist teachers in ensuring learning takes place. Teachers are having to be creative in how new information is taught, re-taught, and demonstrated. And students are having to manage their time, motivation, and own anxiety about missing the social aspects of school.

Conditions for learning have never been more challenging than they are right now. So, my message this weekend is not to ask anyone to work harder. My message is simply thank you to everyone for doing the best you can. I am drawing my inspiration from students that are making it happen, parents like my ex-wife and the ones supporting our teachers, and lastly, and most importantly, the teachers and staff members who are grinding every day to make learning meaningful, interesting and interactive, even if through social distancing.
