The Eagles' Call!
Edgewater High School Community Brief
Monday, May 11, 2020

In 2004, I received a perfect score on my GMAT Writing subtest. Sadly, my verbal and math scores were not as perfect.

I'm a decent writer. . . because of my mom. My mom taught my siblings and I lots of life skills, but she taught us all how to write effectively. These lessons were learned early in life-book reports (remember those?); journal writing; and even written summaries that accompanied dioramas in old shoe boxes.

My mom was a stay at home mom for my elementary school years, was an active soccer mom, room parent and PTA Officer. She slowly went back to work, part-time and then full time as my siblings and I grew up. At one point she had an interest in teaching journalism at our local high school. But that never materialized.

She eventually ended up working for the Federal Trade Commission, leading a large department, the Office of Consumer and Business Protection. Her office hatched the "Do Not Call" List, a transformative federal program that allowed citizens to opt out of telemarketing calls.

She retired a few years ago, having worked her way up into senior executive service. She never intended to get into leadership or management, but she did. She's always been tough, but nurturing. And she led her office team that way. She traded in the 70 hour work weeks for the FaceTime calls with her grandchildren, the constant reminders to her children to wear masks, and walking 5-10 miles daily.

But, the ability to write effectively is one the greatest gifts my mother provided me. It also means there is no excuse for me to not send cards at birthdays and holidays.

To all of the mothers out there, I thank you for the unconditional love, guidance and advocacy you provide your kids. For all of the aunts, grandmothers and great-grandmothers, the roles you play as quasi-moms are crucial to our kids as well.

And, to those that may be experiencing their first Mother's Day without their mom, may the memories of Mother's Day-past provide you comfort.

April 2020 jobs report:
As you may have already heard, the April unemployment rate rose to a record 14.7% and payrolls dropped by an unprecedented 20.5 million as the coronavirus pandemic hit the economy. This is has been such a difficult period for so many Americans and our hearts go out to them. However, in the middle of this, one pattern holds fast - jobless rates across the country vary significantly based on educational attainment. The more education one has, the better the chances of staying employed.
