The Eagles' Call!
Edgewater High School Community Brief
Monday, May 4, 2020

Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week has a different meaning this year. In the past, we took each day to do something different with our teachers. Obviously, celebrating them in person during the school week isn't possible this year. But, just as we have leveraged social media for communication, and as teachers have made thousands of course corrections for individual students, its perfect timing to provide teachers their due.

I like to think of OCPS as the "smallest" big school district in the country - we individualize and tailor specific needs of kids. If nothing else, distance learning has shown us that our teacher KNOW their kids, our kids KNOW their teachers, and, at least for Edgewater, the kids have seen their principal's handsome face every morning on Facebook or Instagram for a new message.

Teachers are very deserving of their recognition week May 4-8. We were able to deliver 150+ teacher/staff appreciation gifts using CDC social distancing guidelines earlier this week (below). Seeing our teachers and staff members, even from six feet away, made a huge difference for our teachers and staff and also for our administrators.

My humble ask this week is that as a student, parent, alumni, community member, or other stakeholder, please message your child's teachers and thank them for their hard work and diligence. Consider posting something on your social media about your child's teachers, expressing your gratitude.

Through COVID-19, we have seen the superhuman work of doctors, nurses, first responders, grocery workers and others. We have seen the resilience of service industry workers, small business owners, and others who have seen their livelihoods. We need to elevate the sacrifices made by these individuals; let's honor and support them. But let's also take a moment and thank the amazing work done by our educators. And when I say educators, I mean anyone who impacts the lives of kids.

Thank you for honoring our teachers and other educators who make Edgewater a home away from home for our students and community!

Frequently Asked Questions Answered

Q: When will I receive my refund from Grad Bash and Prom?
A: When the vendors return those funds to Edgewater. We paid for our events in advance and cannot refund the events until we receive reimbursement. Once we receive it and it is processed, checks will be mailed to the address used in the verification link at tinyurl.com/EHSSeniorUpdates. For those who have not paid their dues, you can have your refund transferred to your dues. For those who still want a day at Universal with your friends and some of your favorite teachers, the Grad Bash Ticket Exchange Program is the way to go! Let me know if you'd like more information on that program and I can ensure your ticket is transferred.

Q: What about the Senior Breakfast at Dubsdread and the Senior Tailgate?
A: We have not cancelled the Senior Breakfast or Senior Tailgate, and those fees were marginally added to packages.

As such, there will be no refunds for those events.

Once social distancing restrictions are lifted, students will have an opportunity to purchase tickets for these events.

Q: What about Yearbooks and Cap and Gown pictures I paid for?
A: Yearbooks are scheduled to arrive the first week in June. Ms. Lopota will be in contact with you to pick these up. As of right now, we do not know how many extra yearbooks will be available for on-site pickup, but be on the lookout for information on this from Ms. Lopota. If you ordered cap and gown pictures and have not received them, they will be available for pickup when you receive your cap and gown.

Panoramic pictures, shirts, hats, and water bottles will be in your senior packages - along with cords from organizations that supply them. If you are a member of Beta Club, NHS, or another club/organization that traditionally has cords, please reach out to your sponsor to inquire about whether or not you will be receiving cords. This normally comes with an additional charge assessed by the organization or is a part of your dues.
