The Eagles' Call!
Summer Break Update from Edgewater High School
Monday, July 22, 2019 (Summer #4)

With the school year right around the corner, I'd like to close out the 18-19 year with some of our highlights and things we would like to improve upon this upcoming year.

Congrats to our school community on improving the school grade. This is a collective achievement that requires focus, resiliency, and teamwork. Second, I want to congratulate our school community on a 15% pass rate increase on Advanced Placement exams. Third, the 2019 grad rate stands at 98%, our highest ever.

These metrics are cause for celebration. But our work is far from over. Each year brings a blank slate and room for improvement. I see no reason why the incoming freshmen class (the Class of 2023) will not exceed expectations of previous freshmen classes and why the Class of 2020 won't be the first in Edgewater's history to reach 100% graduation.

Lofty goals? Of course they are! But that's the beauty of school. Each year, you can re-invent yourself into a better version of you, strive for improvement, and look for new ways to make the most of your Edgewater experience!

It's great to be an Edgewater Eagle!

Edgewater School Gradeedgewaterschoolgrade

EHS is pleased to announce that Edgewater's school grade has increased from a 'C' to a 'B.' While school grades don't tell the full story about school culture and effort, our increase is a direct result of the teamwork of our teachers, staff, students and parents. Our teachers poured their hearts into their students this year and the students responded well!

We still have much work to do, but it's nice to see our collective efforts have had positive results! Thanks for your support! It has been invaluable! Go Eagles!!!

Class Spotlight - AP Seminarclassspotlight
Attention rising Sophomores and Juniors!

Rising sophomores and juniors are encouraged to register for AP Seminar for the 2019-2020 academic year. The class focuses on themes based on student interests, local and/or civic issues, global or international topics, and concepts from other AP courses. For example, you might explore the question of whether national security is more important than a citizen's right to privacy; or whether genetic engineering is a benefit to society. Both topics would draw from multiple subjects (social studies, science, ethics) and allow you to look at issues through many different lenses.

During the course, you will complete a team project, an individual paper and presentation, and take a final AP exam. Edgewater's 2018-2019 AP Seminar class had a pass rate of 95%! If you want to challenge yourself and gain an opportunity to earn AP credit, be sure to sign up for this course!

Character Labcharacterlab

Over three days earlier this month, Mr. Malcolm and Dr. Shanoff have had the pleasure of learning how to develop grit, resilience, happiness and kindness on our campus through Character Lab Educator Summit at the University of Pennsylvania. Lots of great strategies to incorporate at Edgewater next year! Best part - rising sophomore Javari Carlton spent the week as a student intern with Character Lab, helping to facilitate group activities with educators from across the country! Javari was awesome!

Valencia College - Downtown Campusvalenciacollege

Greetings Eagles,

I hope you're enjoying your summer and eagerly preparing for the year ahead! For recent grads (and their parents), I hope that Valencia College is part of your plans for fall. I would like to personally invite you to enroll at our brand new Downtown Campus, which is opening in partnership with the University of Central Florida this August. To learn more about the campus and why it's right for you, click here to watch a video that gives an up-close look and brief overview of what you can expect to experience at the Downtown Campus.

If you are planning to attend college at the Downtown Campus, you'll want to get started right away by applying to Valencia College and registering for courses. Click here for an enrollment checklist that will help guide you through this process. You'll also want to pay special attention to important dates and deadlines, which you can access by clicking here. Of note, the financial aid priority deadline is Friday, July 26, 2019, which means that students must have completed all steps in their application process, such as applying to Valencia College as a degree-seeking or certificate-seeking student, providing the Admissions office copies of your transcript and submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). For more information, click here.

If you're interested in living on campus, the Downtown Campus offers student housing in Union West at Creative Village, centrally located on campus. To take advantage of on-campus housing, you'll also need to enroll at Valencia College and submit your application for housing as soon as possible. Space is limited. For more information on Downtown Campus housing and residence life, including information about amenities, floor plans and pricing, click here.

You can find more information about Valencia College and our new campus by following the Valencia College Downtown Campus Facebook page or by visiting the Downtown Campus website at https://valenciacollege.edu/downtown

If you're interested in learning more about how the Downtown Campus might fit into your educational plans or what steps you need to take to enroll, stop by an Answer Center on any of our campuses or contact Enrollment Services at [email protected] or 407-582-1507.
