What is Green Your Routine? The City of Fort Lauderdale created the program to foster sustainability. As defined by the United Nations in 1987, sustainability is “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
Back in 2009, the city formed an inter-departmental Green Team to take action and the City Commission created the Citizen’s Sustainability "Green" Committee (CSGS). This turned into the Sustainability Advisory Board.
The Sustainability Action Plan (SAP) created priorities for a greener government and set goals toward a more sustainable city. This ensured that city operations, services, and regulations would be “triple bottom line” focused, taking into account fiscal, social, and environmental factors.
In Edgewood, we are working to coordinate sustainability-related events: we can adopt a 1-mile stretch of roadway in the City of Fort Lauderdale; adopt at least five storm drains, and volunteer with the Take5 Recycling audit to make rounds throughout the City of Fort Lauderdale. We promote the idea of sustainability with our ECA newsletters and social media, which are full of informative sustainability-related articles.
